w00t props out to Lost In Translation
#2 on my list of top movies this year. :) |
I don't agree with all the choices, and I too think Pirates of the Caribbean should be on there, but this list at least seems reasonable. There were no "what the hell?" choices in my book. Also, glad to see Lost in Translation, my favorite film up there, so highly rated.
I really can't comment on Monster as I haven't seen it, but I am really looking forward to it, even more so now. |
His past # 1 picks:
2002: Minority Report 2001: Monster's Ball 2000: Almost Famous 1999: Being John Malkovich 1998: Dark City 1997: Eve's Bayou 1996: Fargo 1995: Leaving Las Vegas 1994: Hoop Dreams 1993: Schindler's List 1992: Malcolm X 1991: JFK 1990: Goodfellas 1989: Do the Right Thing 1988: Mississippi Burning 1987: House of Games 1986: Platoon 1985: The Color Purple 1984: Amadeus 1983: The Right Stuff 1982: Sophie's Choice 1981: My Dinner With Andre 1980: The Black Stallion 1979: Apocalypse Now 1978: An Unmarried Woman 1977: 3 Women 1976: Small Change 1975: Nashville 1974: Scenes From a Marriage 1973: Cries and Whispers 1972: The Godfather 1971: The Last Picture Show 1970: Five Easy Pieces 1969: Z |
Not a bad list, a bit too vanilla for my tastes. Out of his top ten, I've seen all but three: Monster, Owning Mahowny, and In America. Owning Mahowny I missed out of sheer circumstance and I never really had much interest in seeing In America. But all this hype about Monster is on the verge of igniting my cynical side, putting me on guard before I have a chance to see it. That's always annoying.
However, Ebert's mention of Safe Conduct is surprising and laudable. That one fell through the cracks. And I wouldn't put Pirates of the Caribbean in my top 100 of 2003 . . . |
Wow - I never realized he chose Almost Famous in 2000.
(Note to self: See Eve's Bayou) |

I've seen Michael Bay Films Paint Dry, but while the concept is sound, the explosions get tiresome and the shaky-cam seems gratuitous. |
Wasn't the movement of the dripping paint (computer-generated from Andy Serkis' movements at great extravagent expense) very lifelike?
|
Originally posted by Matthew Chmiel Now I haven't seen Michael Bay Films Paint Dry, but I did enjoy Peter Jackson Films Paint Dry. It was a tad long, but Jackson did very interesting things during the film involving blood and custard. :) |
Charlize is truly great in MONSTER and the first half is an inspired film, but it falls off into TV b-movie land the rest of the way.
It wouldn't even make my Top 20. |

I do agree that all of the 25 films Matt pointed out were a lot better than POTC. I'd also have to give a mention to the film Camp being a better movie than POTC, then again I saw Camp four times during it's (brief) theatrical release here in Vegas. :) My Big Fat Greek Wedding only made $200 million because women with no taste and old people went out in droves to go see it. It was a 90 minute sitcom on the big screen! If they ever make Everybody Loves Raymond: The Major Motion Picture, it has a chance of being the highest grossing film in America! :) |
"Pirates of the Carribean should be on EVERYONES top 10 list"
I wasn't at all that impressed with Pirates, a huge dissapointment if you ask me |
I recently saw Dark City w/ Ebert's commentary and I was quite impressed. Yet, he gave 3 stars to Bruce Almighty, a film that I and many critics deplored. I think Ebert is a mixed bag these days. Cerebral today, populist tomorrow. Regardless, I'll usually read what he has to say if I'm interested in a film.
His show, on the other hand, has totally lost its edge. I've been watching it since the 70's, and I can't say that I enjoy it that much anymore. I miss Siskel. |
I have an immense amount of respect for Ebert, and agree wholeheartedly with his top ten.
I do miss Gene Siskel, though, albeit that I agreed more with Ebert's comments then Siskels. |
 1998: Dark City
I couldn't help but notice X2 was missing. WTF?!? |
