Wow, ROTK, how dissapointing ;)

I am truly sad that the new farrelly brothers film isn't doing well.
Goes to show you where the minds ofmost of todays audiences are.If it's not non-stop funny and actually sincere, they don't want it. Screw them. It was the best comedy of the year.

On a plus note, bad santa is still doing well. And deservedly.

chucks888 12-21-03 12:58 PM

Stuck on You was just not very funny. And the few funny parts were (what a surprise) plastered all over the previews and trailers. You might say it's unfair to compare it to something like "Dumb and Dumber" which is leagues funnier. But when they're both movies directed by the same directors, both about two dopey guys who even share the same haircuts, it's kinda hard not to.

However, I'm surprised it's doing as bad as it is at the box office.

RichC2 12-21-03 01:01 PM

So does this mean the LotR Series is officially a flop? :D

That's cool though. Most trilogies seem to have a strong first movie, a stronger second, and a wimpering third (in terms of grosses). LotR seems to have broken many trends and that was definitely one of 'em.

raven56706 12-21-03 01:12 PM

That is actually great........Remember it is a 3 hour 29 min movie. It wouldnt have made the same as harry potter or spiderman because they are shorter films

Matthew Chmiel 12-21-03 01:40 PM

ROTK has made more in it's first five days than both TTT and FOTR. I predict the film will outgross TTT and FOTR and total in over $350 million domestically. In my opinion, I think there was a lot more hype for ROTK than the first two films ever had, and it looks like it lived up to the hype.

HOLY CRAP!!

Looks like I'm a dumbass for betting 10 dollars that Mona Lisa Smile would clean house this weekend...

Hello? The last Harry Potter movie was like 2 hours and 45 minutes! Not as long as ROTK, but not exactly short.

That being said, ROTK may be #1 at the box office for a LONG time...there's pretty much nothing coming out (aside from a few Christmas Day releases...none of which I think will surpass ROTK) until Kill Bill Vol. 2 in February.

Yes. Yes you are.

ViewAskewbian 12-21-03 04:12 PM

But will it beat Titanic?
I'm so tired of having to state that Titanic is the highest grossing film of all time!

edytwinky 12-21-03 04:15 PM

How can you call that a disappointment? Just wait til Christmas time and we'll see how much RotK will gross from there

Jackskeleton 12-21-03 04:24 PM

Christmas day openings don't look as strong. I expect LOTR's to be bringing it in at #1 for a while to come. :D

Matthew Chmiel 12-21-03 04:41 PM

ROTK will be #1 for the next few weeks. I will guarantee you that, just look at the daily grosses for FOTR and TTT. It will clean house, unlike Mona Lisa Smile. ;)

That and Christmas Day looks like a total bust for new movies. Peter Pan isn't getting that good of early reviews and Paycheck looks like it will hurt Ben Affleck. Okay, it won't hurt him as much as Gigli (a total career killer), but it'll still be painful when it bombs.

You can always say it is the grossest film of all time and be accurate!

PalmerJoss 12-21-03 05:38 PM

I don't think it'll beat Titanic in overall grosses, but I do think it'll finish somewhere in the vinicity of 360-380 million, thus beating out the previous 2 installments.

Get real! ROTK won't even get within 200 million of Titanic, much less beat it.

It will be VERY interesting to see how well Cold Mountain does when it opens Christmas Day, especially since it's a "big and prestige" movie. However, I've read that the reviews have not been as positive as Miramax hoped....

Well, all he said was that ROTK is a longer movie. 3:29 is certainly longer than 2:45.

It does look like a good movie, and the Golden Globe nominations help, but it still seems like it has limited appeal. A few of the "smarter" movies do seem to do well every year, but many go the route of say The Hours or Gangs of New York and make a small amount. I expect Cold Mountain to fall into the latter group.

resinrats 12-21-03 11:10 PM

I have no idea why Cold Mountain is getting the hype it is? What is so special about it. It just looks like any other romantic drama.

To put things in perspective Titanic almost made more then the first two Rings movies combined. And they were friggin' huge! What a freak that thing was.
