Sean Astin wins Best Supporting Actor

From the Seattle Film Critics....not the greatest predicator, but at least ROTK has finally earned its first acting award.

Go Rudy...I mean Mikey--I mean, Sam!

Seriously, that's great. Astin was an absolute linchpin of the movie.

I think he deserves an Oscar for the way he captured the heart of Sam.

He was Sam and when I had heard he was cast I was not sure he could pull it off.

Have not seen "King" yet, but he was great in "Towers".

Two thumps up for Sean Astin.

Sean Astin as Sam in ROTK is even that much better than in TTT.

Nice. It's good that he's getting some recognition. His performance was just amazing, and I'm glad he's being rewarded for it.

Nice to see an award for something more substantial than "Best fight with a giant elephant" or something.

exactly! I totally saw him standing on stage, thanking everyone at the Oscars scene after scene with him. And that part when he says I can't carry the ring, but I will carry you ---- AMAZING!!! Iconic! Best Support Actor of 2003. For sure!!!!!

Personally, if not a win, Mr. Astin deserves a nommination. His portrayal of Sam was dead on. There are many movies where you say to yourself "I cannot picture ANYBODY else playing that character". Astin as Sam is one of those. The scene on Mount Doom where he carries Frodo was heart wrenching and the look of pure sorrow in his eyes when Frodo tells him to go home tears me up now as I write this. I never thought too highly of the Goonies kid but, boy, do I now. A great portrayal for this actor and I hope Astin is used more now in the type of film he deserves to be cast in.

I would guess that he has more lines and screen time in ROTK than any other character.

If Astin doesn't get an Oscar nomination for ROTK...then I guess I'll just have even less respect for the Academy than I already do. Congrats to Sean on the award and on his absolutely fantastic performance.

"there is some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and its worth fighting for"

+

"maybe I can't carry it, but I CAN carry you!"

= solidification in my mind that sean astin is a great actor.

He had such a thankless role and he really made it his own. Good on him.

Way to go, Sean. You deserve it, buddy.

I guess I am just alone here. I didn't think he was anything special and thought most of his scenes with Frodo were almost unwatchable at times. It just seemed to me that both him and Elijah Wood were overacting and chewing on scenery. But I guess I am alone in that boat. I had heard over and over again before seeing ROTK how great Astin's performance was and had enjoyed him in the previous two, but I just didn't think he was good in this one.

Oh, and I don't think I have ever heard anything as cheesy as that line about not being able to carry the ring but being able to carry Frodo. Some of his lines (and for that matter the lines of others) were so cheesy I felt like I couldn't watch the movie without crackers.

badger I sorta agree with you. I do think Astin did a great job in the role and brought some good heart to it. But I don't think in any way it's an Oscar worthy performance. The character goes through some emotional moments, and at times is very moving, but it's just not anything I would give an award to. While it is moving in reference to the story, I never found it to be very in depth and extremely compelling. I still think the two best performances were that of McKellan and Serkis. Serkis for adding so much emotion to what I think was the most fleshed out and interesting single character in the whole trilogy and not to mention creating a performance that was completely not human or normal, and Gandalf for owning his role more than anyone else in the trilogy (he just...was gandalf...).
