Starwars VS James Bond Box office gross question

My Fiance was playing the DVD game Scene it, and one of the questions was...

As of 2000 Which movie series has grossed More money.
The coices were...Starwars, Star trek,James bond and something else. Anyway the answer was James Bond.

Could this be?
I know James bond had more movies, but as of 2000, Star wars had 4 movies, not to mention the SE releases in 1997 which make 7 and they all did extremely well compared to James bond. Also many bond films were in the sixtys and 70s when movie grosses were lower due to lower ticket prices.

RyoHazuki 12-13-03 11:53 AM

James Bond has still had 20 movies. Thats a lot for SW to beat. Ticket prices are probably ajusted too.

fumanstan 12-13-03 12:18 PM

I agree, the number of movies probably carries Bond to the top. I know the box office numbers get a little skewed because of inflation, but 4 star wars movies making 300 mil versus 20 bond movies making 100 mil still puts Bond over the top.

Terrell 12-13-03 01:04 PM

Adjusted for inflation, I believe Star Wars beats Bond. But unadjusted, the 20 Bond films is just too much for any series to top. Think about it. 20 films. That's one hell of a lot of films. Star Trek isn't even close. Only one film ever crossed 100 million dollars.

QuiGonJosh 12-13-03 01:21 PM

Yeah...Bond is still #1...

Groucho 12-13-03 01:35 PM

Adjusted for inflation, Bond would beat Star Wars by an even bigger margin.

Jericho 12-13-03 01:45 PM

You also have to understand Bond is very popular worldwide, much more so than the average movie. And the early Bond films were HUGE hits, which is why as Groucho pointed out, even with inflation, it would defeat Star Wars

QuiGonJosh 12-13-03 02:43 PM

But you gotta admit that its a bit unfair since Bond has 20 movies and SW only 5 right now...and 6 when alls said and done...and who knows how long Bond will go on...I can see it goin on for another 40 years!

Lets do this with 5 movies...the top 5 Bond movies VS the 5 SW films:

Bond Top 5 Total: $587mil
Bond Top 5 Inflation Total: $1.4bil
Bond Top 5 Worldwide total: $1.6bil

SW Total: $1.8bil
SW Inflation Total: $3.2bil

Drexl 12-13-03 03:08 PM

Well, I would think SW would win if you counted licensing deals with books, toys, videogames, etc.

jaeufraser 12-13-03 03:30 PM

Bond just has more movies. Purse and simple. On a movie per movie basis Bond doesn't holda candle to Star Wars. But they're still very big movies. The current Bond flicks with Brosnan always do 100-150 in the US and probably 300-400 worldwide. That's four mvoies right there. Now, throw in 16 more films and yeah...Star Wars gets beat.

You got that backwards, the margin would increase in Bond's favor.

Jackskeleton 12-13-03 08:49 PM

I don't recognize episode 1 as a star wars film. ;)

"As of 2000" was the question.

DRG 12-13-03 10:02 PM

This almost HAS to be adjusted for inflation (or it's not including The Phantom Menace). Or are they using worldwide numbers? Although I would think Star Wars films do just as well abroad...

As of 2000

Star Wars $460,998,007
Empire $290,475,067
Jedi $309,306,177
Phantom $431,088,297
= $1,491,867,548

Bond Movies (minus Die Another Day)
= $1,111,713,990
* This comes from Box Office Mojo and includes the unofficial Never Say Never Again)

Terrell 12-14-03 01:35 AM

I think you guys, including me have it all wrong. According to boxofficemojo.com, here are the all-time unadjusted domestic figures for the James Bond franchise. This includes all 21 films, including Die Another Day. Pasted directly from boxofficemojo.com.

Total: $1,271,915,096
Average: $60,567,386

Unadjusted totals for Star Wars and it's 5 films are as follows. I'm rounding off to the nearest million.

Star Wars - 461 million
Empire Strikes Back - 290 million
Return of the Jedi - 309 million
The Phantom Menace - 431 million
Attack of the Clones - 310 million

That comes to slightly more than 1.8 billion dollars domestically, for an average around 360 million per film.

So no, James Bond and it's 21 films don't come close to Star Wars box office.

Jay G. 12-14-03 08:29 AM

It depends on if the numbers are adjusted for inflation or not. Adjusted for inflation the total for all 5 Star Wars films is:
$3,191,783,387
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted/

Adjusted for inflation the total for all 21 Bond films is:
$3,236,808,000
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/franchi...d/adjusted.htm

Note that in 2000, each franchise would've had one less film, and Bond would've been in the lead by a much wider margin.

Also note that the 21 Bond films include Never Say Never Again, but exclude Casino Royale. Casino Royale made $22,660,450 in 1967, which would be about $111,380,462 adjusted for inflation.

QuiGonJosh 12-14-03 08:40 AM

Never Say Never Again is not an official Bond title...therefore it shouldnt be included in the list...

Well there are some slight problems with your numbers. For on, as per 2000 would knock out the last Bond film and the last Star Wars film. One should also not count Never Say Never Again.

And your forgot one important thing: WORLDWIDE Gross. You can make money in places other than the U.S.

Jericho 12-14-03 10:36 AM

Worldwide numbers from Boxofficemojo:

19 Bond movies: Total: $3,234,600,000 (minus DAD and NVNA)

4 Star Wars movies:

Phantom Menace: $925.6
Star Wars: $798.0
Empire: $534.2
ROTJ: $476.0
Total: $2,733,800,000

Bond wins by about $500 million as of 2000

Even with AOTC added in for Star Wars, Bond still is ahead with the gross for DAD

josuff247 12-14-03 11:46 AM

So many different points of view.
The question didnt say anything about
inflation or tickets sold,
Just which grossed more.

4 SW films...But 7 with the SE's

Naw, the SE's dont count. Those box office totals get rolled in with the original movie's box office count, and not tracked as a seperate total.
