Misunderstood Movie Moments

This thread is about those bits in movies that for some reason cause a lot of confusion in the audience. I was inspired by watching Saving Private Ryan the other night:

Spoiler:
There is a character in that film nicknamed "Steamboat Willie." He is the German soldier that the squad captures and eventually sets free.

Anyway, a surprising number of people I talked too after the film came out thought that Steamboat Willie was the same guy who stabs Mellish (Adam Goldberg) near the end. This isn't true at all...Mellish is stabbed by an SS guy.

Willie does show up at the end...he's the one who kills Captain Miller (Tom Hanks), and he is eventually executed by Upham (Jeremy Davies). I've even talked to people who thought that this was a third character!

For whatever reason, that particular sub-plot was completely lost on a lot of people.

Can anybody think of any other examples of this sort of thing? Try to avoid examples that involve the entire film...like "Nobody understood Muholland Falls!" I'm looking for more focused examples, dealing with minor plot points and such.

everyone thinks they said "play it again, sam" in casablanca, when it was actually said in "a night at casablanca" the marx bros. movie.

Good one! I have actually watched the film with people who thought the version we were watching was cut because the line wasn't said.

I'm amazed at the number of people who simply don't get what happens at the end of Reservoir Dogs.

Spoiler:
I've met more than two people that don't know whether or not Mr. White killed Mr. Orange at the end.

Oh well.

Speaking of Tarantino . . .
Spoiler:
What the hell is in the briefcase in Pulp Fiction? That and what's the deal with the bandage on the back of Marcelus' head? There is a lot of speculation about theset two points, but I don't know anyone who has ever really felt like they understood what was going on.

Cool idea for a thread, BTW . . . :)

Another point of confusion in Reservoir Dogs:
Spoiler:
The fate of Mr. Pink. Did he live or die?

Spoiler:
i think he died, we hear gun shots after he walks outside before the cops came in to kill everyone else.

Monster's Ball

Spoiler:
they didnt have sex for the sake of having sex....or even because they were drinking...they had sex because they were both in pain emotionally and they NEEDED each other. The same goes for how Halle DID NOT go nuts after she discovers her ex's drawings....again she/they NEEDED each other so much all the other bullshit went out the door.
IMHO, very powerful.

Now I have question about THE PIANO....

Spoiler:
did she die at the bottom of the sea at the end or what?

The Sopranos

Spoiler:
the Mercedes at the end of the ep where Gloria was threatened to stay away from Tony was NOT part of any plot. The commentary by David Chase made NO reference to the Mercedes in the shot and the fact that Gloria killed herself later is further proof that tale of obssesion is over.

If I had a dime for each of my friends who confuse Saruman and Sauron....

Yeah, you can blame Tolkien for that one. Giving the characters such similar names was a huge blunder IMHO.

In the Bakshi version, they decided to rename Saruman to "Aruman" at the eleventh hour, but they didn't dub all the lines so he's still called "Saruman" in some scenes. Basically, they went from bad to worse, and managed to piss off fans of the book immensely.

Or calling Hobbits "the little kids"

But the Mr. Pink DVD set says "The only one who got away" in his biography.

Similarly, James Cagney never said "You dirty rat" in any film...yet every time you hear a Cagney impersonation, that is the line you hear.

Spoiler:
He lived but did not escape the cops. Buddy Holley being a bad waiter might have something to with the fact that he's out on parole and now has to deal with tips

IIRC, May West never said "Why don't you come up and see me some time".

She said something else....that I can't remember

Mae West is often misquoted saying "come up and see me sometime". What she said was "why don't you come up sometime and see me?" in She Done Him Wrong.

Of course, she WROTE the play the film was based on, so the line could have changed over time.

Reservoir Dogs
Spoiler:
A lot of people dont know that Mr. White shot Nice Guy Eddie

Maybe not misunderstood but I dont know how many times Ive had to explain that no one died during the filming of Ben-Hur.

Depends which version of Ben-Hur you are talking about.

RyoHazuki 12-08-03 09:56 PM

Yeah the Charlton Heston one.

About the bandage on the back or Marcelles neck in Pulp Fiction.

Spoiler:
I think it's said on a commentary on the movie that the actor Ving Rhames has a distracting scar on the back of his neck there, and rather than cover it up with make-up they figured it would just be easier to put a band-aid over it. And with the brief-case, Tarantino himself has been unclear about what's in there. I think he just wants us to use our imaginations. The same thing with the name 'Reservoir Dogs'. Tarantino doesn't give a strait answer about what it means. They just 'are' the Reservoir Dogs he says on the easter egg interview on the UK DVD. Also, I don't think a cop killer would get parole any way you look at it. Interesting theory though.

Samuel 12-09-03 12:02 AM

In Scarface Tony Montana says "Another Quaalude, and she'll be mine again" but I've actually heard some people misqute it as "Another quaalude and she'll love me in the morning". Hmph.

outcastja 12-09-03 12:07 AM

Darth Vader never says, "Luke, I am your father." He actually says, "No, I am your father."

Spoiler:
Isn't there a scene after the almost-drowning that shows her playing the piano in a new house with a metallic finger? That would seem to make it clear that she was saved.

But then, it has been ages since I have seen The Piano.

Yeah i read something about this w/ soundclips (don't remember from where). But during the credits if you listen very closely you can hear cops yelling for him to get down and then some gunshots
