The Triplets of Belleville - wide release, when?

I konw that this is in LA and New York, (obviousily), but when is Sony going to release this wide - before the end of the year? I have the feeling this film is not going to get included on my '2003 Film' list. :(

Matthew Chmiel 12-07-03 11:50 AM

Sony originally had plans just to keep it as a "really limited" release, but with the positive word of mouth it's getting, it should spread to theaters across the country soon, but before the end of the year? I don't coun't on it, unless you live in the top twenty (maybe thirty) markets.

Grimfarrow 12-07-03 07:55 PM

I saw it - very original and funny - to a point. The visuals and the reference to Jacques Tati, Fred Astaire, Josephine Baker, etc. were great. But the plot is rather contrived. I give it an 8/10, definitely worth seeing.

Goldberg74 12-07-03 08:23 PM

As soon as it goes wide, I'll be seeing this one.

MrN 12-07-03 08:46 PM

I doubt this will truly go wide - probably will be just top 30 markets or whatever.

Opens here in the S.F. area Dec. 26

sundog 12-08-03 01:49 PM

Opens in Chicago on the 26th as well.

Saw it today and was much impressed. It was well into the film before I realized there weren't subtitles - and they weren't necessary! So, well-crafted and directed.

The story isn't anything deep - its all about the gags and they are very clever. And the visuals of course are totally unlike any other animated film (for obvious reasons.)

Make sure you stay till the end of the credits.

8/10

Great GREAT film! And one of the year's best. I saw it in London this past (late) summer. I'll definitely be seeing it again when it opens here.

RevLiver 12-30-03 12:53 PM

I'm planning on seeing it this weekend. I saw the preview before a screening of The Station Agent while I was on a business trip to Southern California a few weeks ago, and the music had me tapping my foot along with it. I hope the film's score uses much of the same music and that it's available on CD.

I saw this today, and really enjoyed it a blast and a half, and as someone who loves the tour de france this was an excellent movie.

Nice pic of Coppi :D

Wow, what a great film! Triplets has catapulted into my top 10 list for 2003. It's a feast for the eyes and ears, and damn, does this movie have personality! So bizarre and wonderful.

RichDB10 01-22-04 12:15 PM

Yep...a great little film!....just got round to watching another Sylvain Chomet feature (short) the other day i'd only just seen for the first time...La Vielle Dame Et Les Pigeons.

Where'd you see it? Is it downloadable?

Received the French SE(R2) of Les Triplettes De Belleville from FNAC and it came with that.

Have absolutely no idea at all with regard to whether any downloads exist i'm afraid.

I would assume there is no English subtitled option on the French SE, right?

RichDB10 01-22-04 01:17 PM

You would assume correctly!....i knew studying French to 'A' (UK Exam system) level would one day pay off :)

pooh... :(

so why was the title changed to "Belleville Rendez-vous" for UK theatrical distribution?

I'm not sure....i suppose as 'Rendezvous' can be used quite readily in the english language and to a non-french speaking audience would merely be interpreted as a meeting in Belleville.. it would gain a greater market audience than if it was distributed in the UK under it's French title etc.....don't know for certain by any means...just my take on the matter.

Question: Is the Disney/Dali short Destino a Landmark Theatre exclusive? The New York City presentation I saw last December didn't have it? The film is finally opening here in DC tomorrow (finally!), and I have a choice of four theatres to see it at (one Landmark, two Loews/Cineplex' and the Cinema Arts), and I would favour the Landmark if the short is the bonus.

William Fuld 01-29-04 01:01 PM

According to the Landmark website it's exclusive in "most of our markets". I bet that includes DC.

Saw this last night. No english subs in the movie either. You don't really need them as there is very little actual dialogue and the movie does an excellent job of telling the story without. Highly recommended. There are some extremely funny moments and I loved the music.

Corvin 02-15-04 01:45 PM

It opened a bit wider in the Chicagoland area this week. I have a tough week at school, so I'm hoping it stays in theaters until next Friday so I can get a chance to see this.

Patman 02-15-04 03:56 PM

I walked out of this fillm half way through. Just didn't feel I was going to enjoy the rest of it.

scott shelton 02-15-04 04:44 PM

I picked up a DVD copy off Ebay. I enjoyed it.

DealMan 02-15-04 08:29 PM

I just saw it and thought it was great. I walked out when the credits started, though. Anyone care to tell me what happens during the credits? (besides scrolling names :))
