Raging Bull: Overrated

Am I the only person on the planet who feels that this movie is overrated?

And I'm certainly not a hater of Mr. S, I love 90% of his films.

Taxi Driver is one of my all time favs.

But 'Raging Bull' felt empty to me.

Anyone else care to comment?

Groucho 11-28-03 10:36 AM

The film is on a lot of Critic's all-time top 10 lists. It is frequently cited as the best film of the 1980's. One could find it to be "Great" and still think it is overrated. :)

Personally, I think it's a masterpiece.

QuiGonJosh 11-28-03 05:52 PM

If you think Raging Bull is overrated...you deserve a swift kick in the balls...

this as been a public service announcement from your local fanboy. :D

Gyno Rhino 11-28-03 06:53 PM

Heh, that's about the kind of response I expected.

Mutley Hyde 11-28-03 07:01 PM

 Good one.

I've actually never seen it. :o

movielib 11-28-03 07:01 PM

I think it's a very good film but yes, it's way overrated. I'll take Taxi Driver over it every day of the week.

I never really cared for it at all. I know I am supposed to worship it or something, but I just can't raise any excitement about the movie. It was decent, but just not great in my opinion. But then again, I think Scorsese is kind of overrated in general. I know that puts me in the vast minority of film geeks, but that's just how I feel.

Me too. If anything, DeNiro's performance in Raging Bull is superior, but from a directorial POV, my money is on Taxi Driver.

I think Raging Bull is brilliant and probably Scorsese's best film. Taxi Driver, Last Temptation of Christ, and Goodfellas close seconds.

Why should I try to convince you to like something you don't? It didn't do anything for you.

gutwrencher 11-28-03 09:44 PM

it turned into a which is yer fav film thread. and who over-rated it? you either like it, love it...or dont. I love it....like I love Taxi Driver.

I do think Clapton is an over-rated guitar player.-wink-

When I was still a teenager, I hated the film. What I didn't realize then was that I hated it because of the main character. Once I understood that, I went back and saw it again. I was able to see why I disliked the character so much, but couldn't deny then how much of an impact the whole movie was having. It has a swiftness of its own that you really can appreciate it.

Unfortunately, I read the book by Jake LaMatta, and a lot of what's in the book isn't in the film, such as a rape he committed to a childhood friend, not the teen at the bar. Anyway, I'm STILL waiting for this dvd to be rereleased. Hopefully there will be a commentary....

This is probably my favorite from Scorsese.. Not as intimate as TAXI DRIVER, or grand as GOODFELLAS, but just as powerful.

Pauly 11-28-03 10:47 PM

Raging Bull could never be overrated. It is truly one of the finest films ever made.

jfoobar 11-29-03 02:39 AM

Now The Last Temptation of Christ is overrated.

The Nature Boy 11-29-03 02:46 AM

I think you are underexperienced or possibly undereducated. You certainly are not the only person on the planet to feel this way. But I think a person needs some years in life to appreciate this film, and be in the moment of that frustration Jake feels. Beyond the emotion of the film, it's rather inarguably one of the five greatest films imagewise ever made. And that's a consensus shared by the most important audience for such evaluations, directors and D.P.'s.

But I do question how you can be a true Scorsese fan and not at least like this movie? I mean, you think stuff like After Hours, New York New York, Bringing Out the Dead and Kundun is better than this? I mean, all those films have some redeeming value, but the are no compare to the experience that Raging Bull is. Between the acting, the cinematography and writing in that one, it's work of art.

QuiGonJosh 11-29-03 04:46 AM

There isnt a movie Scorcese's made thats overrated...all are works of genius!

Gattman 11-29-03 04:51 AM

I have to agree I think Raging Bull is an average film

Wonder if I should start a Pulp Fiction is the MOST over-rated film of the 90's and not be flamed

Its all people's personal opinion

PalmerJoss 11-29-03 07:37 AM

Not everyone is going to think that the movie is wonderful. I think it's an amazing movie, certainly one of the greatest ever made and definitely Scorcese's best work to date.

I think its a very good movie. Still not as good as Taxi Driver.

Lateralus42 11-29-03 02:24 PM

Masterpiece. People that dont agree should stop pretending to love real cinema and just watch Adam Sandler movies or something.
