Best 50's Sci Fi movie?
Watched FORBIDDEN PLANET again this weekend...it's been awhile.
This HAS to be the best Sci-Fi movie of the 50's. Great costumes, great script, great acting, fantastic effects, the most beautiful colors/matte paintings of it's era. Any other film come close from that era? |

THEM!
|
I agree, it's Forbidden Planet
Hey it's based on Shakespeare, it's gotta be good! |
The Day The Earth Stood Still is the best Science Fiction film of the 1950's.

You guys have picked the big three already:
Forbidden Planet Day the Earth... Incredible Shrinking Man After those comes It Came From Outer Space and Invaders From Mars. And don't forget Invasion of the Body Snatchers. |
My top 3:
1 The Thing From Another World 2 The Day the Earth Stood Still 3 Invasion of the Body Snatchers 4 (The Quatermass Xperiment) |
I'd have to go with <b>THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL</b> which is not only my fav scifi from the 50's, but has a firm spot on my "top 10 movies of all time" list.
Every other title mentioned so far is also a winner! |

I can't pick just one, but probably one of these three: Forbidden Planet, the Day the Earth Stood Still, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I just saw War of the Worlds for the first time last week, and it was pretty good too.
|
My favorite is The Thing From Another World.
|
I'm with The day the earth stood still, I also like Invaders from mars but every time I see this, it is on a poor print which actually makes it a bit more scary.
I would also add War of the Worlds. |
A friend of mine does Friday Night Spookfest where he shows two "classic" 50s sci fi movies, a cartoon, a serial, and a 3 stooges short to his friends.
Of course the stuff we watch is along the lines of Manos, Hands of Fate, Tobor the Great, The Giant Claw (a must see), and Bride of the Atom. There was one week when we watched Orgazmo, and we'll be watching Barbarella soon. But those are the good movies. |
I like many of the titles mentioned, but my personal favorite is <b>"War of the Worlds"</b>
|
My favorites of 50's sci-fi would be:
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea The Thing from Another World Invasion of the Body Snatchers Them It Came from Outer Space Godzilla, King of the Monsters I don't know, I love 50's sci-fi and horror, but The Day the Earth Stood Still just never really grabbed me. Forbidden Planet is completely fantastic in regards to visuals and sound effects, but man, some of that dated dialogue really brings it down a notch for me. I'd give an honorable mention to: The Fly The Deadly Mantis The Black Scorpion It Came from Beneath the Sea Earth Vs: the Flying Saucers |
