Bad movies with good screenplays?

Perhaps this thread could also have the title "good scripts botched by Hollywood". Are there any notorious examples of a film that was good on paper, but badly ruined when adapted to the screen?

Supposedly "Soldier" had a pretty good screenplay, but was just ruined by the stuido/Paul anderson. But I'm nto sure on that.

I wouldn't say that Hollywood ruined them, but I've always felt that Paul Sharader (with the exception of Mishma) is a far better writer than director. I wouldn't call Blue Collar or Hardcore 'bad' movies. I wished they could have been done by a stronger director.

I know i read somewhere that tarantino thinks that i know what you did last summer had a good screenplay but the movie obviously sucked. I'm not sure about this one, althought the book was pretty decent, so maybe....

I read the script.. it thought it sucked too.

But then I read the script of Matrix well before it came out and thought the Wachowski's were some crazy white boys and no ****ing way would they pull it off.

While "Bonfire of the Vanities" was a great book, the screenplay was crap (as was everthing else about the movie).

The Last Boyscout Shane Black's Tarantino-esque script saves the movie from its absurd plot.

Natural Born Killers springs to mind.

Barton Fink is better read than seen.

There aren't too many examples because generally people don't read the screenplays to films that sucked.

"Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" was an excellent script- completely undone by George Clooney.

Well, the dialogue wasn't great, but what a story.

Rod Lurie's first major film, Deterrence, although I wouldn't call it "bad." Ironically, his next film, The Contender, would have and should have been great had it not been for the screenplay.

If it ever gets made, Superman: Lives. Whatever WB ends up making will blow goats compared to Kevin Smith's script.
