Not to mention the fact that, as long as the Ring exists, Sauron draws strength from it. And, as long as he draws strength from it, he can make war on Middle-earth. The only way to defeat him, as was pretty clearly spelled out in the council of Elrond, is to destroy the Ring by casting it into the fires of Mount Doom.

You are assuming that will happen! Granted, we have not yet seen "the Voice of Saruman" and "the Palantir" chapters on film (even though they were in the second book, and will hopefully be in the third film.)

MadMonk: we know the bit about Aragorn has been filmed and will show up in ROTK.

resinrats: in the book the question of dropping the Ring into the ocean is explicitly discussed. Gandalf says that "there are many things in the deep waters," hinting that there's something down there that might grab the Ring. He also notes that it might wash back up on shore again.

Also, it's not clear that Gandalf can teleport objects (if he could, he'd surely teleport himself instead of having to travel everywhere by foot or horse.)

He also would have had a heck of an easier time getting off of the top of Isengard.

I think Frodo didn't give Sam the ring for the reason he states: the burden is his and his alone. He's trying to protect everyone else, or at least that's what I got from it.

I think it's a fair question, by the way.

Frodo didn't calmly tell Sam that the task was his. He was yelling with gollum-esque fervor: "The ring was entrusted to me. It's my task. Mine. My own."

At the end of the movie Frodo wasn't trying to protect Sam when he was holding Sting to Sam's throat for a good 30 seconds.

We've already seen Saruman use the Palantir in the films, so presumably, we will be seeing it again in the third film.
