Why can't they learn?

Taking into account that Hollywood is slow to learn it's lessons, I'll forgive them for the first and second failure. Heck, if I'm in a gracious mood I'll even forgive the third. But after "Son of the Pink Panther" failed, I would have bet my entire movie collection that we would never see another Pink Panther film.

What is freakin' wrong with these people??? I like Steve Martin and director Ivan Reitman, so I mean no personal disrespect to them. But no Peter Sellers + Herbert Lom + Burk Kwouk = NO SALE. Now, at best, they're just being stubborn and greedy. At worse, they're disgracing the memory of Peter Sellers.

Perhaps Blake Edwards finally does realize this. Is he involved at all with this one?

And how do you make a prequel with an actor who looks older than Peter Sellers did??

And what's with all these prequels anyways??? (I blame Luca$. :) )

Steve Martin is just too old for this. It's one thing to have a character age into the role age in the role... but Martin is already older than Sellers was when he died. I'm not sure who they're trying to nab with the casting choices. Beyonce is obviously an attempt to appeal to the younger crowd, but will they be into Pink Panther? Or Steve Martin and Kevin Kline for that matter?

If anything, I'd rather see an unknown or barely known comic actor in the role, but seeing as a blatant attempt by MGM to create another tentpole franchise (007 can't hold it up alone) that won't happen.

Thread now fortified with trailer goodness

Pink Panther

Ah c'mon...Steve Martin, Kevin Kline, and Jean Reno? It could be good! I'm a HUGE Sellers fan, but I can give this a shot.

Trigger 12-18-04 01:16 AM

Ok - I am still against the idea of making a new pink panther, but I think it looks like it could be good anyway. Steve was an excellent choice - looks like he's back on his game.

After seeing The Life and Death of Peter Sellers the other night, I think if they make another Pink Panther movie, Geoffrey Rush should be offered the role of Clouseau. He did a fabulous job of becoming all of Peter Sellers' characters in the biopic.

And he looked eerily like the guy.

Dr. DVD 12-18-04 03:43 PM

I agree with the statement about Rush.

That trailer didn't really make me laugh until he did the fall gag with the newspaper. Hopefully a great cast like this can pull something funny out of all this, but it looks like a poor imitation.

IMO, Peter Sellers=Irreplacable

The New PINK PANTHER Trailer

Steve Martin takes over for Peter Sellers in the remake that no one asked for:

Clearly, is HOLLYWOOD OUT OF IDEAS?

Texas Chainsaw, Bad News Bears, now this??? How could THIS be better than the original? Tell me.

El-Kabong 12-21-04 01:18 AM

While I'm going in with very, very, very, very, VERY low expectations - I couldnt help chuckle at a couple of spots in the trailer. (I'm a sucker for slapstick).

Will it be any good? I have no idea. Is Blake Edwards even involved?

Well, I'm still probably going to go see it. I even saw Son of the Pink Panther - so why stop the hurting now?

Brent L 12-21-04 01:25 AM

Jean Reno, Kevin Kline, and Steve Martin.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I have a very good feeling about this one.

Fartface 12-21-04 08:51 AM

Steve Martin is 60, Sellers was 55 when he died...and they want to make a pre-quel...does anyone see anything wrong with this picture?

mllefoo 12-21-04 12:10 PM

Yeah. Steve Martin is no Peter Sellers.

There's something about that man that bugs me. I know he's funny and talented and all that, but I just cannot stand him. And I cannot stand to see him as a pale imitation of the original Clouseau. It's just so...wrong.

LorenzoL 12-22-04 08:53 PM

I loved the original movies and the awesome job that Sellers did in them. After watching the trailer, I don't think that the new movie will even come close to the original.

sometimes you wonder what these guys are doing...
