Movies you just can't get through
We all know the ones. Typically they are critically acclaimed, so we're more often to stick with it even if it's not clicking with us individually, waiting to see what the fuss was all about.
I pose this question, because I've embarked on my ultimate example, AGAIN. I love Kubrick, appreciate his place as perhaps THE premiment technician, and I've loved everything I've seen from Spartacus to Eyes Wide Shut(and nearly everything in between). But in the last 8 years, I've tried once a year to get through "Dr. Stranglove", and I never get past the 35-40 minute point in the film. I'm bound and determined now, I just got the DVD out of my library, after taking all my stabs on VHS, so maybe that helps.
When I watch it, I always picture the Chris Cooper in American Beauty, watching the old Army movie and laughing at the "in" jokes, and I feel like his dazed wife, oblivous to whatever references make it a special film.
And take note, this, or I assume any other mentions in here, aren't bashing the film, it's just how it sits with the viewer. I assume the defect rests with me and not the film, so Kubrick defenders can relax.

It took me years to get through Barry Lyndon. I'd try and try, but would always switch it off around the 35-40 minutes mark. Ironically, when I finally did watch it all the way through I found it engaging and watched it a second time not too long after.
I have trouble with a lot of the French movies. Like Godard's movies. A lot of the jump-cut, long take techniques always seem more interesting to read about then watch.
And try and tray as I might, despite the rave reviews, each Bruce LaBruce movie I put on just dosen't do it for.

It took me literally about 5 months to make it all the way through A Knight's Tale, which I had Tivoed. Once I finally finished, I was sorry I had even bothered to start.

The first time I saw "The English Patient", I thought it would never end.
However, of movies I actually own, I still have trouble with "Star Trek: The Motionless Picture"...and I am (or was until about 5 years ago) a HUGE Star Trek fan. (Keep in mind, I don't own NEMESIS, or that one might make the list as well).

Boys Don't Cry. Tried watching this at a friends house, left after about an hour. Of course they said 5 minutes after we left the movie got good, I am still pissed at the time I wasted to go back and rewatch it.

The only film I absolutely could not make it through was Spartacus. Other movies, even if I dislike them, I always sit through them.

I've never made it all the way through 2001. It just bores me to tears.
Also, Jules and Jim. I've tried 3 separate times, and each time I get so annoyed with it that I shut it off.

Watching Gosford Park was a grueling task. Overwhelmed with boredom, I stopped it halfway. About an hour later I decided to bite the bullet and finish it off, hoping that it got better. It didn't. Watching this movie was like staring at a blank wall with that Hampsterdance.com music repeating over and over in my ear. (actually, that would have been slightly less tedious)

Lost Highway I have tried 3 different times to watch this, and can't get past the first 20 minutes. I can't say that I am a huge David Lynch fan, but neither am I a hater. I have enjoyed some of his previous work, but this one...

2001: A Space Odyssey
I have tried several times and I make it about a half-hour into the film and I fall asleep. I have never seen it straight through. Only bits and pieces of it here and there. I shall keep trying until I make it - I promise.

That and everything else Meryl Streep or Robert Redford have been in.

Dont worry. Mine is almost as sacreligious as yours: Seven Samurai.
