Who else loves Steve Martin, but hates his films?
Bowfinger
LA Story Roxanne I sit through these going, c'mon Steve I know the genius is in there somewhere. Then he starts talking to a highway sign. |
He's made a lot of crappy films, but those are probably three of my favorites from him.
His best stuff is still his standup routines. Some classic bits. If you ever get a chance to see his play "Picasso at the Lapin Agile" performed, take it! Simply hilarious stuff. |
I prefer him as a standup comic.
|
Roxanne & LA Story WERE genius.
Bowfinger was great too. But, the Jerk is the best. |
"The Jerk"? "The Man with Two Brains"?
Genius. Inspired, even! And "Roxanne" is pretty good, too... Anything more recent, though, I don't bother. Which -- who knows? -- could be my loss. I mean, for all I know, "Novocaine" might be brilliant and I'm stubbornly resisting its charms. Alas and alack. |

I loved Bowfinger and LA Story. A lot of his movies I just don't care for, but I still like him because he does excellent standup.
|
Steve Martin rules as a comedian but his movies seldom work for me.
His Best Comedy: The Jerk His Best Movie: The Spanish Prisoner Also, I hated Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid when it first came out, but now I like it. |
I adore The Jerk. dont care for the other ones. love his stand-up. in fact...I've loved Steve pretty much since I was a teen and saw him for the first time on SNL.

I think BOWFINGER is a brilliant flick... it is hilarious, witty and Martin turns in an excellent performance...sure, Eddie Murphy really steals the show, but I think BOWFINGER is an underrated comedy classic that hopefully in the future will get the recognition it deserves.
MATT p.s. I'm not kidding |
Just the other day, THE MUPPET MOVIE was on TV with Martin's bit-part as the snarky waiter. "Oh, MAY I??"... classic stuff. I seem to enjoy only those movies where he let's his "wild and crazy guy" personality slip in. Stuff like THE JERK, DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID, etc.

I think I fell asleep watching Roxanne.
|
Bowfinger is a classic movie. Don't sleep on it.

Moving To Movie Talk
|
LA Story is the best comedy of the '90s and is among the best comedies ever made (but you probably have to be from LA to appreciate it completely)
|
Don't forget Dirty Rotten Scoundrels!
|
anyone hate steve martin's movies and...... hate steve martin
yeah I guess I am in the minority, I just find his over the top performances annoying, and the fact that he is really arrogant... |

Another vote in favor of Bowfinger. It's a fun flick (and I don't like Martin all that much.)
|
Since this discussion is about movies and actors, and not DVDs, moving to Movie Talk.
|
He hasn't made a film I've liked in well over a decade now, but I still find him amusing, likable, and a good Oscar host.
Another actor who I like, but don't like his films...John Cusack. |
He's awesome in Father of the Bride! Great movie!
|
No love for Planes, Trains and Automobiles?
