Who else loves Steve Martin, but hates his films?

Bowfinger
LA Story
Roxanne

I sit through these going, c'mon Steve I know the genius is in there somewhere. Then he starts talking to a highway sign.

Groucho 09-10-03 01:17 PM

He's made a lot of crappy films, but those are probably three of my favorites from him.

His best stuff is still his standup routines. Some classic bits.

If you ever get a chance to see his play "Picasso at the Lapin Agile" performed, take it! Simply hilarious stuff.

Dragonslayer 09-10-03 01:19 PM

I prefer him as a standup comic.

Rogue588 09-10-03 01:21 PM

Roxanne & LA Story WERE genius.

Bowfinger was great too.

But, the Jerk is the best.

celluloidwisdom 09-10-03 01:23 PM

"The Jerk"? "The Man with Two Brains"?

Genius. Inspired, even! And "Roxanne" is pretty good, too...

Anything more recent, though, I don't bother. Which -- who knows? -- could be my loss. I mean, for all I know, "Novocaine" might be brilliant and I'm stubbornly resisting its charms.

Alas and alack.

Seriously, that's a comedic classic. The current DVD just pisses me off. Why release The Jerk MAR???? Oh wait, it's Universal. Now I understand.

PalmerJoss 09-10-03 01:24 PM

I loved Bowfinger and LA Story. A lot of his movies I just don't care for, but I still like him because he does excellent standup.

Damfino 09-10-03 01:25 PM

Steve Martin rules as a comedian but his movies seldom work for me.

His Best Comedy: The Jerk

His Best Movie: The Spanish Prisoner

Also, I hated Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid when it first came out, but now I like it.

gutwrencher 09-10-03 01:35 PM

I adore The Jerk. dont care for the other ones. love his stand-up. in fact...I've loved Steve pretty much since I was a teen and saw him for the first time on SNL.

The genius is in there (says the person who hasn't seen Bowfinger.) Sometimes it's in the obvious bits and sometimes it's the little things. My favorite moment in Roxanne is when he buys a newspaper from a newspaper box, starts reading the headlines, screams, puts more money in the box and puts the paper back. It's just a 15 second gag, but it's exactly the kind of unexpected humor that I love.

I think BOWFINGER is a brilliant flick... it is hilarious, witty and Martin turns in an excellent performance...sure, Eddie Murphy really steals the show, but I think BOWFINGER is an underrated comedy classic that hopefully in the future will get the recognition it deserves.

MATT

p.s. I'm not kidding

Just the other day, THE MUPPET MOVIE was on TV with Martin's bit-part as the snarky waiter. "Oh, MAY I??"... classic stuff. I seem to enjoy only those movies where he let's his "wild and crazy guy" personality slip in. Stuff like THE JERK, DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID, etc.

Kinyo 09-10-03 02:16 PM

I think I fell asleep watching Roxanne.

zerotl 09-10-03 02:37 PM

Bowfinger is a classic movie. Don't sleep on it.

Moving To Movie Talk

Pants 09-10-03 03:42 PM

LA Story is the best comedy of the '90s and is among the best comedies ever made (but you probably have to be from LA to appreciate it completely)

angryyoungman 09-10-03 03:46 PM

Don't forget Dirty Rotten Scoundrels!

ArchibaldTuttle 09-10-03 04:02 PM

anyone hate steve martin's movies and...... hate steve martin

yeah I guess I am in the minority, I just find his over the top performances annoying, and the fact that he is really arrogant...

Agreed. I like him when he hosts the Oscars but his humor is umm..not funny.

Inverse 09-10-03 04:55 PM

Another vote in favor of Bowfinger. It's a fun flick (and I don't like Martin all that much.)

Static Cling 09-10-03 05:25 PM

Since this discussion is about movies and actors, and not DVDs, moving to Movie Talk.

LBPound 09-10-03 05:50 PM

He hasn't made a film I've liked in well over a decade now, but I still find him amusing, likable, and a good Oscar host.

Another actor who I like, but don't like his films...John Cusack.

Get Me Coffee 09-10-03 06:09 PM

He's awesome in Father of the Bride! Great movie!

RyoHazuki 09-10-03 06:14 PM

No love for Planes, Trains and Automobiles?
