Paper Moon (1973)

Paper Moon (1973) - ***1/2 (Out of 4)
In recent years, there have been countless movies about conmen. And there have been plenty of movies about fathers in questionable occupations that are reunited with their daughters. But this movie's simplicity has them all beat. Maybe because Ryan and Tatum O'Neal are also real life father and daughter, it's easy to believe them in this movie. This was Tatum's first movie and she deservedly won the Oscar for it...the youngest person to win an Academy Award. Filmed in black & white, this film had a good look. Along with an appropriate soundtrack made it easy to believe it was back in the 1930's.

Excellent film: ****/****. Great performances (especially the wonderful Madeline Kahn as Trixie Delight).

Randy quaid is great in this movie

I haven't viewed the movie in over 25 years, but I still remember the line "Her bladder must be the size of a peanut" like it was last week.

Necro bump time.

I watched this on Netflix the other day, on the insistence of my gf, and really enjoyed the hell out of it. Ryan gives a fantastic performance. I don't know if I've seen him in anything other than the infamous YouTube clip where he showcases how bad he can be. Here, he's so slimy and conniving, but that heart is lurking just below the surface.

Tatum was good for her age, but everything she said sounded like it had just been memorized. Don't get me wrong, she did great for a child actor, but I don't know if I'd call it an Oscar-caliber performance. I did love how she started off quiet, then slowly revealed she's a much sharper tack than Moses gave her credit for.

Floyd rules.

I loved it when Miss Trixie was trying to walk up the hill to Addie and keeps losing her footing. "Oh... son of a bitch!"

I hope a BD is in the works. I'd like to revisit it again sometime.

One of my favorites. I have the Oversized French Theatrical poster signed by Bogdanovich.

Great film. I seen it years ago but my wife hadn't seen it and I had her watch it about a year ago. Great every time I see it.

Ah, fuck! How the hell did I forget The Driver? One of the best films of the '70s.

I still need to watch Barry Lyndon.

WHAT'S UP DOC? (1972), also by Bogdanovich, is worth seeing also.

My favorite Ryan O'Neal performance is THE BIG BOUNCE (1969), based on the Elmore Leonard novel, which was later horribly remade with Owen Wilson.

(Is this nine-year-old thread officially the oldest that's been bumped in the past week?)

Love Paper Moon.

Also love What's Up, Doc?

Will have to check out the Big Bounce and I don't really remember the Driver and never saw Barry Lyndon. Thanks for the tips.

Great doesn't even begin to describe this wonderful film. One of the 70's very best.

"So how 'bout it, honey? Just for a little while, let old Trixie sit up front with her big tits."

Years ago there was a favorite shot thread in Movie Talk (might still be around w/dead links?) and I posted one from Paper Moon when they are going down a street in a town.

I loved how they styled Ryan O'Neal's hair in this film! Awesome!! (And he looked good in a mustache!)

I wonder if either Ryan or Tatum can watch this movie without great emotion, since they do not really get along in "modern times." And I wonder if Ryan's other kids are jealous that they never got a chance to star in a movie with Daddy.

I need to find the shot I was talking about. I want to think I just froze the dvd and did a photo of it.
