Originally posted by tonytapez i can't really imagine why anyone would think this movie doesn't have blockbuster potential. i mean if its as good as we all hope it is then it may very well be a big "christian" movie, by which i mean all christians have a high desire to see it and almost feel obligated to do so, not unlike how many jews felt about schindler's list. this is also helped by the fact that they wanna release the film around easter, which is a smart move. you could be certain the film will be gettin alot of free advertising every sunday morning at mass if the catholic church digs the flick. "Reforms created at the Second Vatican Council eliminated much of the language and teaching which had been used within Catholicism to justify anti-semitism - but Gibson belongs to an ultra-traditionalist form of Catholicism that rejects the authority of Vatican II and, apparently, the current pope. He is frequently portrayed as simply being 'Catholic,' but he is Catholic in a way that would be unrecognizable to most. So why doesn't the media make this point more often and more clearly?" In the end, just as many Christians may find fault with Gibson's self-proclaimed "historically accurate" film as Jews. Originally posted by tonytapez also, all the boycott / anti-semetism talk would most likely draw more people to see the film than to not see or boycott it. do that many people do whatever these religious fanatics tell them to do anyway? |
Originally posted by chanster Just like Judge Roy Moore or Jerry Falwell speaks for all Christians? Give me a break. You can pull anyone off a crappy news channel and then make anti-semitic or anti-christian remark and then you are the bigger idiot. Whenever Jerry Falwell speaks on CNN, I am sure he is speaking for all Christians. I know this for a fact. The media and the left love the simplicity of labels, so the likes of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton (blacks), Trent Lott (Republicans), John Ashcroft (Pentecostal), etc. become the representative "voice" of their constituents. It's a lot simpler and easier to push agendas that way. In fact, just look at Garrison's post below -- he loves grouping everyone together under the same heading. Of course, I guess it does take a rocket scientist to decipher the difference between "I can see" and "I absolutely 100% believe this down to the core." |
I am a devout Christian and I think Jerry Falwell is an idiot. And the majority of people i know think the same, so no he is not speaking for all Christians.
Did "Last Temptation of Christ" have a problem getting picked up by a major studio(i know it had a lot of people who was agaisnt it before they ever saw it, but i didn't know about the studios). I was only 12 at the time so i wasn't really paying attention. That wasn't really based on the bible, but i will say that in certain scenes Willim Dafoe played the Best Jesus i've ever seen in a film. |

Originally posted by tor_greg It appears to me to be a sound decision by Fox. It's a high risk film that could get them tons of life-long boycotts, and Fox has nothing to lose by passing on this, it's not like they're hard up for money. |
I'm hoping...and willing to bet...that Miramax picks this one up. It's just the kind of risky movie they like to pick up, and it could prove to be their big Oscar picture push for this year.

Is the movie still in dead languages without subtitles?
Everyone's screaming about ADL or whatever trying to stop this movie, but the above surely the ultimate box office kiss of death. I mean, if they have to dub the word "football" into "soccer" for the US release of "Bend it Like Beckham," imagine what moviegoers will do with two hours of Latin. |
Originally posted by paradicelost I am a devout Christian and I think Jerry Falwell is an idiot. It seems that nobody wants to listen to moderate and liberal Christians. Just the cryptofascist zealots. |

On that Muslium religion is allowed in public schools& collage campus. That was on the news.
And when there's news of anything Jewish or Christian being mentioned in public schools or collage campus, the ACLU is quick to jump on that. That's been on the news a few times after 9-11. Now on what I ment on who runs the world, that's written clearly in the bible. I don't want to say because if you want to know read it. But when I read that verse it explained to me why the world is the way it is and the injustice all over the world. |
from what I hear, the cost of the flick is around $25 million. I think this controversy only fuels the interest, and it should easily make it's money back through the theaters and DVD sales.
|
I for one, won't pick it up or see it. I have no interest in Gibson's religious preference and him wanting to use movie's as a way to preach it. Same with Travolota's 'Battlefield Earth'.

Well I hope someone will pick it up and distribute it cause I really want to see it. Im excited about the lack of english and use of the actual languages in the movie, but I guess that might just me me.
Cant wait to see it. |

...Fox's decision was originally disclosed during a rally held outside News Corp's Manhattan headquarters by New York Assemblyman Dov Hikind, who called upon other film companies to reject the film, insisting that it could revive antisemitism. Gibson's movie, Hikind said, "is unhealthy for Jews all over the world." UTTER BS. REAL Christians will not think anything negative against Jewish people. REAL Christians love Jews and pray daily for the peace of Israel. Some of the BIGGEST supporters of Jews here in America are the same Christians many here on dvdtalk HATE. BTW, a city official is calling for studios to reject the film. So I say it is a form of censorship. Shouldn't he be worried about potholes, crime, and city corruption on the govenrment level? Frankly I don't give crap what you guys say. If it were any other Faith being treated this way you all would be singing a different tune. Face it, most of you hate anythng that could hold Christianity in a positive light. When Christians were pissed about Last Temptation of Christ, you were all telling Christians to shut up.... "It's just a movie". It's so funny how you guys are so dishonest about this hatred of Christians. censorship n 1: counterintelligence achieved by banning or deleting any information of value to the enemy [syn: censoring, security review] 2: deleting parts of publications or correspondence or theatrical performances [syn: censoring] Source: WordNet ® 1.6, © 1997 Princeton University |

Originally posted by Darren Garrison Evangelical Christians want the Jews to conquer all of the lands (encompassing several other countries in the reigon) that "God" told them belonged to them in the Bible so that the 2nd coming can happen and all non-Christians can be brutally slaughtered (by sword or by plague, it is still slaughter by "God") so that all Chrsitians (and ONLY Christians) can be happy forever and ever and ever. The Christian wet-dream is the slaughter of everyone who is not a Christian. Just read the book of Revelation and then see how much of Christian retoric is praying for that situation to take place as soon as possible. Gee, how could that plan EVER engender hate? NOT TRUE. You're posting absolute lies. You have no idea what the hell you're talking about and just trying to be an ass with your hateful crap filled post. |
Originally posted by Groucho It would only be censorship if he was FORCING studios to reject the film. Mr. Hikind is entitled to his opinion of the movie, even if it is uninformed. As are you and I. Just because he is an Assemblyman doesn't mean that he doesn't have a right to share his views.[/b]Back that up.[/b]Back that up.[/b]It was just a movie. One made by a Christian, one that held Christianity in a posititve light. The folks that protested that are no different than those who are protesting The Passion now. In both cases, it is my opinion that the protestors should see the movie first, and that both groups are equally silly. What's the inconsistancy? [/B] I don't need to back anything up. I see what I see here on dvdtalk. |

These site are all about calling ALL Christian Cultists. While I will admit...more than you're willing to do concerning your hatred of Christians...that there's a fringe element that has extreme views in Christianity, they DO NOT fall in line with TRUE Christian beliefs. True Christians are also vocal about denouncing these extremists. you even had the balls to include a site from aljazeerah? We all know how much they care about "truth" concering anyone not Arab. Why don't you include a KKK site while you're at it? |
Why not try actually READING some of the articles first? Like it or not, a LARGE NUMBER (many millions) of Evangelical Christians think exactly what I accused them of thinking. If you want to split hairs and claim that they are "not Christians" because their views don't fit your premise of what a Christian is supposed to beleive, go right ahead. But not only do they concider themselves Christians, there are the single most outspoken group of Christians in the US and arguably the world.
