are El Mariachi and desporato essential to enjoying once upon a time in mexico?

I mean to understand the story ect. I;m getting the 2 pack today and unless mexico isn't an official sequel or the other 2 flicks suck, I'm buying them.

Groucho 08-29-03 10:55 AM

Probably not.

Copperpot 08-29-03 11:29 AM

Actually, I kind of think it would be. Especially considering the story behind the first two movies and the director robert rodriguez. He has a book out chronicalling the making of El Mariachi (Called Rebel without a Crew), which is really good. He made the first one for like 7000 bucks or something, and that's what got him started. His original vision was for a trilogy, but El Mariachi seems a little more standalone due to the fact that it is sans any hollywood actors and filmed on 16mm B&W...

But, maybe I'm biased.

Rypro 525 08-29-03 11:31 AM

I thought el mariachi was in color? (no reviews have mentioned it in black and white)

The Antipodean 08-29-03 11:48 AM

"Desporato"??

sho kosugi 08-29-03 11:51 AM

I think it would help a lot, not soo much from a story wise standpoint, more of a mood thing.

Not to mention I think they're two great films.

You should watch Desporado and El Mariachi before Once upon a time in mexico. simple as that. Think of watching return of the jedi without watching the two films before? Sure you can enjoy it, but you will enjoy it a lot more if you knew some backstory.

by the way, the other two films do not suck. they are very enjoyable.

Rypro 525 08-29-03 12:11 PM

pervert question, does Salma get neked in desporado?

HistoryProf 08-29-03 12:24 PM

Ok people...bear with me: D - E - S - P - E - R - A- D - O

Desperado ---- got it? ;)

And yes....Selma shows the goods in Desperado....

Jackskeleton 08-29-03 12:24 PM

I believe it was a body double, but yes there is one of those steamy sex scenes in there. Now will you watch it?

Rupin 08-29-03 12:35 PM

Salma does get naked.....and she's hot!! However, there are quick cuts and dissolves so you're not getting a nice long look.

El Mariachi was not shot in B&W....it's in color.

RR rocks and I can't wait to see his new film in its HD glory!!

I just finished shooting a short HD film as well and love the format!!! :)

I noticed that Tarentino has a part in desperado, does he have one in once upon a time in mexico by any chance?

God, I hope not, but him and Rodriguez have done a few things together so it wouldn't surpise me.

this week's Entertainment weekly

"When we were doing From Dusk till to dawn back in 96, Quentin suggested I do a third El Mariachi/Desperado movie and it could be like my own Fistful of dollars trilogy"

the film has taken sometime to get pumped out to us simply because Rodreguiz wanted to learn how to score a film himself right. Tarentino shouldn't make an apperiance, you will find out why in desperado. :p

This is true but then again neither should Cheech Marin and Danny Trejo but they seem to be back. -wink-

Wow, that's some clever wording there, Jack. Now I have ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE what might happen to him...

:)

they are the typical Mexican background characters. They are to Robert Rodriguez what Bill Paxton is to James Cameron. the homie they like to keep around on the set in some way. look at there resumes. ;) ;)

Indy Jones Fan 08-29-03 11:08 PM

I know what you're saying there Jack. Just last night I commented to my wife that Rodriguez seems to have a "family" of people he uses in his films. Pretty good family I might add.

cross 08-29-03 11:27 PM

Might as well watch From Dusk till Dawn while you're at it

no real reason, but its fun

Tarantino 08-29-03 11:51 PM

No, he doesn't have a cameo.

Venom 08-30-03 01:52 PM

looks like a another remake to me, from the trailer atleast. desperado was definitely a remake of el mariachi, with the main difference being in the first they guy wasn't a killer and really didn't know what he was doing. while this 3rd may not be an exact remake it looks like it is gonna use some stuff from desperado, a la the 3 mariachis.

well then, I guess we better go tell Robert Rodreguiz that he is not correct when he states that Desperado is a sequel to El Marachi and that this is the third part.

from watching the trailer you can obviously see that it's a different film with an extension of the old story. you have johnny depp as the CIA agent playing both sides of the field setting up the guitar player to do a hit for him in a sense. looks fresh to me.
