Ben Stiller and Jack Black's Envy to go straight to video?
Movie insiders fear Ben Stiller's new flick Envy will bypass the cinema and go straight to video. The funnyman's new comedy, about two business partners who fall out over an invention that evaporates dog waste, has been rescheduled numerous times and now looks set to miss the big screen altogether. The feature was originally supposed to be released in May but has now been put back until next year. Envy's studio DreamWorks say the movie, which also stars Jack Black, Rachel Weisz and Christopher Walken, has been rescheduled due to last-minute adjustments.
The trailer actually had me laughing out loud in the theater. I'm
kinda surprised that there's so much trouble with this one...
I mean come on, "Va-poo-rize!"

Considering imdb's gossip column is full of BS far more often than it's not, I would pay this no nevermind until the word comes officially.

I live in LA, and I saw production signs around the area THIS WEEK for the new ending they are filming. If they were dumping it on video, they wouldn't be spending any more money on filming new scenes.

I could not, in clear conscience, live in a country that would release this movie straight to video while choosing to release Gigli & From Justin To Kelly in theatres..

I for one wish ALL movies would go straight to video. I hate everything about the theatrical experience (except for the actual presentation, read: people are inconsiderate jerks) and 99% of the time just wait the 6 months for the video release anyway. Seeing as how home video sales outgross theatrical runs, I can forsee the possibility that 20 years from now we may not even have theatrical runs.
That being said, I don't see how it is possible at all that anyone would consider that this movie would NOT see a thetrical run.

The thing is, the theater acts as one big advertisement for the DVD release. How would J6P know what to buy or rent if he hadn't seen a preview in the theater?

Yep, from those idiots at IMDB:
Ben Stiller Comedy Set for Theatrical Release
Contrary to recent reports, the Ben Stiller comedy Envy, in which Stiller co-stars with Jack Black, is currently set for an April 2004 theatrical release and will not be going direct to video. The DreamWorks comedy, about two business partners who have a falling out over an invention that makes one of them filthy rich, also stars Rachel Weisz and Christopher Walken.
I like how they say "contrary to recent reports" as opposed to "contrary to what we said right here yesterday." Like I said, I don't put much stock in the nonsense they print in their gossip columns. Wrong far more often than not.

While I thought some of it looked funny, I am surprised so many people are interested in a movie that uses dog waste as a plot point. IMO, that is a surefire sign that a movie is flawed.
