For me the last two Coen films were so completely disappointing that I need to read a lot of good reviews to convince me to throw six dollars at it.
Tonight's review on the 11 o'clock news, NBC - Channel 4's Arch Campbell was a positive review, but of course, I generally don't care for the movie he likes, so I guess that would be a deterent. |
I, for one, think it looks fantastic. Maybe the first mainstream Coen Bros. movie (not sure if that's a good thing though).
|
I'm looking very forward to it. What can I say--I want to like romantic comedies, but almost always hate them. This has promise of being actually funny in a slightly twisted way, and maybe even romantic (the curse of romantic comedies is that most are neither.)

The Coen brothers have done it again, crafted a fun yarn about the need for matrimony and discovering the cost of it. The film builds slowly, with many details that add to the overall tone of the film, with the to-be-expected eccentric/fun/scheming Coen characters adding to the canvas, and I think the climax and resolution are very satisfying.
I give it 3 stars, or a solid grade of B. |
for a Coen Bros. movie, it was slightly disappointing. For a romantic comedy, it was very good.
what does that mean? its worse than the average Coen Bros. movie, but better than almost any romantic comedy. |
I was disappointed. I thought it was OK for a wacky Romantic comedy, and although it had Coen elements, it just didn't work as a Coen flick either... The pacing was far too slow and many of the ideas weren't fleshed out too well... Clooney was great, as was the Wheezy Joe character, but overall, I was left wanting more (and I have LIKED all the recent Coen flicks....but this one was just OK) probably I guess 3 out of 5 stars... I don't think audiences are going to embrace this film....

I liked it. I think most casual movie-goers won't know what else the Coen brothers have done off the top of their hand, so they won't really be let down by a non-Coenesque feeling, if you will.
But yeah, as I said, I liked it. Nothing ground breaking, but it had its funny moments. That's the movies place, and you should respect it for that. |
I loved this movie! In no way was it a non-"Coen Bros" movie either.

*** out of *****
I was a little disappointed, but I still liked it. Clooney and Zeta-Jones were fantastic. And the supporting cast was good, too. But the movie seemed to drag ass in parts - it really needed to be tightened up a little bit. It could have easily been ten minutes shorter. |
George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones both had great on-screen chemistry, and there is some funny bits and it felt like a Coen brothers film. But I left wanting more, and a little let down by the story, the script had too many characters,
Spoiler:
I also thought the opening credits with "Suspicious Minds" playing was a nice touch. Overall I thought it was a very hit and miss, but I give the edge to recommending it, if not for the leads being so likeable. A **1/2 to *** out of **** |
I haven't seen it but Cathy Z looks positively DEE-LICIOUS in a all the promo photos and trailers.

I hadn't realized it was a Coen Brothers movie (I went based on the trailers and CZJ).
I got more then I expected, mostly because of the laugh out loud parts that were well written and delivered on target. Spoiler:
CZJ proves how much better she is than her looks, and that's saying a lot (Michael Douglas is one lucky man). She's able to say so much with just a raised eyebrow. |
I loved it.
A nice throwback to the screwball comedies of long past (and much missed) with the usual coen bros. slant. The whole movie rides on clooneys performance & his delivery of the snappy dialogue and he comes up aces. He's the real deal. A movie star with smarts. It's going to get better on each viewing considering it has some really great and imaginative isolated scenes. Much like the big lebowski. It works as a romantic comedy as well as satire of the whole deal. Irony is always in the air. Keep these gems coming, boys. |
I enjoyed it quite a bit.
George Clooney has never impressed me more than he did in this film. Funny, quirky and nice to see the Coens do something with a mainstream budget. I don't think they should limit themselves to only the smallest weirdest topics. |
Originally posted by B.A.hist CRUELTY delivers the single funniest visual gag I've experienced in I don't know many years. I couldn't stop laughing at it. I missed some dialogue in a scene that followed because I couldn't stop. I just saw it and I don't recall anything that sounds like this. |

I am soooo glad I didn't pay to see this movie, I personally thought it was the Coen's worst film (as every indication had led me to believe). It wasn't funny, except for
Spoiler:
oh brother, where are thou... come to think of it, oh brother. They should have retitled it "Intolerable" |
I wouldn't say this is a bad film, but it certainly isn't terribly good. It's still worth seeing as a rental or something, but that's about it. I had a hard time pinpointing what was off for me, and all I can say is that it felt forced. I loved Clooney in O' Brother, and it seemed like he was trying to bring that same quirkiness that made his character so great there into this film. I don't much care for CZJ generally, but she was good in this, and is quite striking. I think what they were going for was a kind of throwback to the 30s and 40s comedies. Unfortunately, it just kind of fell flat. I laughed a few times, but got bored a few times too.....all in all that review posted earlier comparing it to Lebowski couldn't be farther off.....
|
The only 'intolerable cruelty' was that I had to sit through the entire film. It was completely unfunny and predictable. I would sooner undergo an elective rectal examination than sit through another Coen Bros./Clooney pic.

I liked it. It's nothing spectacular, and there are some pacing problems. But if you go in expecting a typical Hollywood comedy instead of a Coen Bros. flick you'll be pleasantly surprised.
(Also, it helps to know that even though this is being sold as a romantic comedy, its real inspiration lies in movies like Bedtime Story/Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.) And it has the best opening shot of the leading man ever! ;) |
I was a little disappointed. For a romantic comedy, it was okay (wayyy better than say, "The Wedding Planner") but not that great and certainly my least favorite Coen brothers' film.
I think I worked myself up into expecting too much--I thought the trailer looked great and it didn't live up to what I thought it would be. tasha |
ok .. just seen it ... some stuff takes time till it comes to our little island ...
i liked it .. i have never been a big fan of coen movies ... and well .. i thought i give it a shot .. and i laughed my ass off at the scene mentioned several times before .. that was classic slapstick .. otherwise there were some slow moments .. and i am not sure about the ending .... I am not an expert on prenups .. and I may have lost just who tears which and waht it means and why and .. well . can someone explain ??? not the one with the BBQ sauce .. that one i got ... but we see CZJ tearing 2 ... i am not getting it .... someone ?? on and where was that cameo ??? I thought actually I saw Bruce Willis at the wedding .. but that turned out to be wrong ... cheers |
This evening I left work on the way to the pub to enjoy a few drinks with friends. As we passed by the downtown theater, I glanced up at the marguee and saw that Intolerable Cruelty was now showing. Terrific. I'd been hoping all week that something would start playing that I wanted to go see.
I had timefor a few drinks, then I cut out early to go to the movie. 'O Brother, this is hands down one of the worst movies I've seen this year. I'm gonna completely ignore that this was a 'Coen Brother's Film' and all the expectations that come with that. Looking at it as a movie made by anybody, it wasn't funny, it wasn't interesting. It was just flat out terrible. Why did such talented filmmakers and actors create this thing? I didn't care much for The Hudsucker Proxy, but there was the promis of an interesting movie. There were creative challenges for gifted artists. Intolerable Cruelty was just awful awful awful. Few things put me in a bad mood worse then a lousy movie. Tonight I am just fuming. |
I loved this movie. Probably because I don't base my opinion on what Brothers made it :)
The #1 reason this worked for me... Jones and Clooney have an AWESOME chemistry onscreen. |
