Am I correct in thinking that the Region 3 version is still for sale online? My DVD player has been hacked to Region-Free, so I may as well buy the Chinese version.
|
I also would like to know where I can get the DVD. I found the VCD, but rather have the DVD of course.

I just picked up a 2disc R3 version from a store In Louisville. It is really out of print. Paid a little to much for it but i really like the film.

Where at in Louisville? I live near there and am in dire need of a decent DVD store that sells imports.
E-mail me at [email protected], pleas. |

Warner Bros. bought the distribution rights to Zhang Yimou's "Hero" in Japan. The film, which came out this past weekend, came in a $5.3 million in 2 days. It is the highest opening ever for an Asian film. To put it in more perspective, according to the distributor Hero’s opening was 158.6% better than Die Another Day and 289.4% better than The Sum Of All Fears.
To date, "Hero" has grossed around $80 million worldwide, and is poized to easily pass $100 million outside of North America. With such success, Miramax is wavering around and delaying this until unspecified date in 2004. Why? Supposedly they are having "difficulties" marketing it, and Harvey Weinstein himself supposedly didn't like the film at all. But Warner sure didn't seem to have much of a problem. Not only that, supposedly the Director's Cut is not out because Miramax is blocking its DVD release until it opens worldwide. But the way it is going, that may be when the moon turns blue. |
I got the R0 dts version delievered about 10 days ago from a US retailer. Have to say I really liked the film, although it was a little different that I thought. The picture really is beautiful, and although improvements can easily be made to the discs (i.e. more extras, more english), I'm pretty happy. Too bad Miramax has just sat on this one.

Not to heap on this thread, but Slant Magazine reports that "Hero" is now slated to be in limited release on......
(drum roll) April 9th, 2004! http://www.slantmagazine.com/film/film_preview.asp |

I'll just get the DVD and avoid having to deal with Harvey the idiot boy.
Postponing "Hero" till 2004 is rather stupid for a company that is supposedly all about foreign and art movies  |
:hscratch: OK, so after doing some searches and following the links, I can't tell which is the definitive version (short of the never(?) to be release extended cut).
Here are 3 different versions / covers I've come across: 1) One matching the photo above 2) One from a 2-DVD set; the cover has 5 characters arranged in a "V" formation, set against a background similar in color to #1 3) One where the cover has 6 characters on it, set against an orange-ish (sunset) background. What's a boy to do? |
the 2 disc version of hero is region 3 only, but has subtitles for the opening and closing of the movie (the region 0 version does not.

Nothing in english (short of the movie's title under the asian calligraphy).....at the bottom it says DVD9 and also seems it might say that it's region 3.....I dunno...nonetheless, no complaints about the version I did buy....great movie to boot! Anyone know how Versus was? |
FYI for those who haven't yet seen this film....
I received it about a week ago (The Region 3 2-Disc Version) and finally watched it tonight. I loved it. It is easily one of the most artistically beautiful films I've ever watched, and the storyline is great as well. Although it is getting harder to import this title, it is still fairly easy to find an online dealer that will ship it to the US. |
Got the DVD the other day (yes, you are right, the cover is a slip, and underneath is a reddish/pink cover). Just off the page beautiful, incredible cast. Glad I spent the fifteen bucks and took the decision out of Miramax's hands of when I was able to see it.

I also just got this; loved it. Beautiful film.
