British movies

I've become quite fond of Danny Boyle movies, or Trainspotting, 28 days later, and Shallow Grave.

So I was wondering, What are some other good british films?

If you can deal with an old one, seek out my favorite movie of all time, Brighton Rock.

The Italian Job

A classic over there. That's 'the' film everyone's seen and loved.

oh I thought THE film was either "Trainspotting" or "WithNail or I"

but in all seriousness, I don't disagree with you. I know that the film is a favourite with the band the STEREOPHONICS whose video "Pick A Part That's New" is a reactment of the chase scene from "The Italian Job"

Yep, they're up there too. But a lot of folks have grown up watching The Italian Job (I lived in London for years), whereas Trainspotting's a more recent phenomena - one I also don't disagree with - and Withnail & I is usually first appreciated in a dank college dorm.

All classics, though. And I have 'em all on DVD.

Agree. GREAT film. And another popular British film atm, "Bend It Like Beckham". Very entertaining.

I was surprised no-one had mentioned BILB already, Daytripper...

we'll have to mention another of my faves, The Long Good Friday.

Quadrophenia

It seems to me that most people who like Trainspotting would also like this movie (and vice versa).

I didn't realize until you pointed it out that the Region 1 DVD is the original unrated cut of the film - another film to add on my Netflix queue of DVD's.

Thanks Frank!

Some of my favorites (that aren't listed yet):

Let Him Have It (stars Christopher Eccleston from Shallow Grave)
Prick Up Your Ears
Made in Britain
(a young Tim Roth)
The Krays
Peter's Friends
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
(a UK/US effort I think)

oh, and of course anything by Peter Greenaway.

for footie fans: there is this movie that is just about to be released in the UK in May.

The Football Factory

I am looking forward to this movie, since I enjoyed the book alot. I have serious doubts that this will get a stateside release since it's subject matter and tone seems "inaccesible" to the US film market. Oh well, guess I will have to wait for the Reg.2 DVD release later in the year... (sigh)

Ken Loach - 'The Navigators'
'Ratcatcher'
'Winslow Boy'
'House of Mirth'
'Borstal Boy'
