I have to say that I am getting more and more impressed with this film the more we discuss it. That it has so many possible explainations and yet still holds together (fairly well, at least), no matter which one you buy into, is quite a feat. I may have to look into some more Ozon films . . .

I still think that I am most comfortable with the "it's real, but Julie is an imposter" theory, because I think that it supports some of the more subtle plot points better (the entire side story with the waiter, the reactions at the end, etc.), but I am beginning to see more support for the other points of view, as we go along.

The only one that I still can't buy is the "everything was made up" theory. That is just too weak.

I just watched the movie this weekend (great Valentine's flick!). After wading through a page and a half of the "dream sequence" theory, I'm glad to see that I wasn't alone in thinking that Julia "walked in off the street." I saw all those points, and I believe that the lack of recognition at the London office was one of the strongest clues. Also, I interpreted the flashback as an additional way of emphasizing that Julia in France was different than the Julia in London.

Just my 0.02.

I have a couple of questions.

I dont understand when Sarah went to Marcels house and talks with his daughter (mistaken as his wife) why the daughter got defensive when Sarah asked about Julie's mother? Said it was an accident? What happed to Julie's mother.

Also Marcel does not want to talk about Julie's mother?

What was the seen about when Julie called Sarah her mother?

I thought this was a great show. I might have to rent it again.

Thanks,

Andy

Okay I am bumping this thread for my take:

I just watched this on Starz ( R-rated version obviously ).

And I am trying to think of something that doesn't make me think everything was
Spoiler:
made up
by Sarah. But I can't come up with anything good or juicy.

Spoiler:
Julie is a bastard daughter who communicates with her father only for monetary value (staying at the house et al.).

I say this to contradict the made up story plotline:

Everytime we see Julie on camera she is being heard/seen by Sarah or talking to Sarah in the house or around the pool. But in the final scene she is driving off in her car and has no connection to the "swimming pool". But of course, we hear Julie's voice (voiceover) reading the note she left for Sarah. So Julie has some sort of mental connection to Sarah.

Also if you take into account this second assumption, she cannot be someone who just 'walked off the streets'. Being as she knows Marcel and communicates as a friend to him. If she were a stranger, he probably would have questioned Sarah about it, but he comes in and states that Julie wanted the pool cleaned for Sarah to swim in.

Also, Julie is the daughter to Sarah while Julia is the actual daughter. Why different names?

The phone calls/conversations with John make me more

This is ing!

Actually no . . . there is no general consensus as to what actually happened at the end, but if you read through this thread, you will find some interesting theories. Personally, I think that's what I liked so much about it . . . it makes you think.

I haven't seen that one - the regular unrated version has a red bar at the top that says just that.
You might be able to tell which one you have if you look at the back for the MPAA rating - it will have either a "R" or "NR"/Unrated.
