Jesus.

Looks damned impressive (and I'm not the least bit religious).

Nail through the hands?

I thought that Mel Gibson wanted this to be as realistic as possible.

I thought that the nails were hammered throught the wrists. Nailing through the hands, because of the soft tissue, wouldn't work. The condemned would fall off the cross due to the nail ripping through the tissue.

Of course, I could be wrong. 99% of the time I usually am.

Looks good, though. Will definitely be checking it out.

ClarkKentKY 07-12-03 03:48 AM

I think it looks absolutely incredible.

From an average Movie-Going point of view, you'd have to see it on Reputation Alone. The last time Gibson directed a Picture was Braveheart. 5 Oscars. Best Director. Best Picture.

From a Christian standpoint. It looks very inspired, and very accurate. A brutally honest portrayal of events. And good faith-based Films don't come around very often. This is without a doubt, a Must-See.

DonnachaOne 07-12-03 04:15 AM

Smoke, you are correct. Perhaps Gibson compromised in order to attract the less-informed. Perhaps the image of Christ with nails through the hands, the image of Stigmata, is something that Gibson didn't feel was his place to 'alter'.

Or maybe no-one bothered to tell him.

Well, Jesus could have been strung up by the hands. Carpenters have strong hands. Also, the crucified were sometimes tied onto their crosses, and then nailed, to make sure they suffered, and to put the nasty image across to would-be wrongdoers. Maybe nails in the hands were scarier than nails through the wrists? I know it would hurt a hell of a lot more, 'cause I'd be writhing my hands in agony anyway.

There's a lot unknown about crucifixion - was it just for enemies of the state, who used it, was Jesus even crucified or was it just told that way (I believe he was, BTW), would the condemned break out into Monty Python songs - because the records are so shoddy, and in some cases, forged.

Wow.

That's all I have to say about that. That's all I can say.

Anyone happen to know if the music in the trailer is original to the movie or borrowed from another? If borrowed, then know where it's from? I have to add it to my collection. Thanks!

This is from what someone posted on the board there:

"Music=from Peter Gabriel's score to Rabbit Proof Fence
Comment: Highly recommended soundtrack, although it's less song-oriented than Gabriel's "Passion" album. I didn't have much interest in this film, besides the controversy surrounding it, until I saw this trailer. Very intriguing."

Don't know if its fact but hope it helps ya...

No Problemo Man, glad i could help :)

I have watched The Trailer three times now and it sends a shiver down my spine watching it every time....

Trigger 07-12-03 05:51 AM

Guess you have to be into the whole bible/god/jesus thing to wanna see this, cuz this doesn't look interesting to me at all. :/ The only two movies with people nailed to crosses that ever interested me were Life of Brian and Cyborg. I'll send you guys a postcard from hell. ;)

Supreme Sean 07-12-03 09:27 AM

I'm not religious at all, but this still looks interesting. Finally, a trailer that isn't overlong. All we see are glimpses of the most emotional parts of the film, and great use of music to sell the scenes.

Groucho 07-12-03 09:43 AM

After all the hype about how accurate this was, the nails through the hands is laughable. BTW, the movie to show the most accurate crucifixion (based on what historians know about the process) is The Last Temptation of Christ.

BBEANLPHIE 07-12-03 11:15 AM

Great last shot on someone stepping on the Serpent and Jesus standing up with that great soundtrack playing.
I've spent the last 4 years trying to understand Christianity and I've gone through researching the dead sea scrolls where Jesus was supposedly called the *Teacher of righteousness* and even did a speech for my final speech in college on the shroud of Turin the burial cloth of Christ. From everything I've read I have to say that getting staked through the wrists is not a very likely situation as the body weight of any person would cause the stake to rip through the wrists causing the person to fall. Even the Shroud of Turins Image has the man crucified through the wrists. Even though its not in the wrists does it mean you're not watching it??? No I am not a Jesus Freak but this movie makes gives me goosebumps realizing that someone actually put the time and effort to shoot a movie in aramaic about a man that claimed to be God itself or one with God. I mean seriously Anyone that claims to be God or one with God is either a crazy on crack and heroin and ketamine or is who he says he is. Heres 2 link for info on the Shroud of Turin for anyone wondering what it is. The 2nd one is very very detailed so beware.
This movie is a must see.

anyone have a mirror site. AICN can't download!!!

audrey 07-12-03 11:43 AM

I don't see what the big deal is with the crucifixion--nails thru the hands or the wrists; it's a minor detail that in no way impacts the overall story.

It wouldn't be a big deal if Gibson hadn't been pimping this movie as historically accurate. It's like making a "historically accurate" movie about George Washington and casting Samuel L. Jackson wearing a leather jacket.

 Could the British where red leather jackets? ;)

Back on topic - is this available anywhere else? AICN's server must be shot to hell...

I'm pretty up on the story of Jesus and all, but what's up with the pale white bald guy?

ClarkKentKY 07-12-03 01:09 PM

I beleive thats Satan. And i beleive its a woman. From the looks on IMDB, Satan is played by Rosalinda Celentano. I'm curious to see how that is done within the movie.

That's if you believe the whole thing happened in the first place.

It doesn't matter to me, since I consider the whole thing as fictional.

ArchibaldTuttle 07-12-03 02:03 PM

before seeing the trailer I was only mildly anticipating this movie, now I am very excited, it looks like a very powerful movie

for those of you having trouble DOWNLOADING the trailer, try right clicking, and clicking save as, thats the only way I was able to see it

Jepthah 07-12-03 03:43 PM

A few very memorable images. Caveizel speaking (I think it was "Adonai"--translates to 'Lord') on the cross was a highlight; he's an excellent actor. As a whole I don't know if the film will succeed or not. As 'accurate' as Gibson may try to be the fact that the movie is full of white people and takes things directly from the Gospel may not work in its favor. I look forward to it.

The idea they nailed him through the wrists is just speculation and not based on any historical data. There's no factual, historical record about whether he was nailed through the hands or the wrists. If you disagree, show me.

Here is an interesting study (related to the Shroud of Turin) about the location of the nails using cadavers to determine what was possible and/or likely. It determines that an angled nail through the UPPER part of the palm was the most likely, and scientifically sound, location for the nails (see figure 8).

Warning: as mentioned, this study was done using cadavers, the pics may not be for the squeamish.
