"LXG" bombs with critics
 

It appears most of you were right to bash The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen:

Rotten Tomatoes round-up of reviews shows about 20% positive.

I think the most telling review was this:

"Young boys may appreciate the flick's cool gadgets and gee-whiz sensibility, but fans of Alan Moore's graphic novel will be appalled. The rest of us will just be bored."

I've never read the comic, but I've heard many fans of the book talk about the movie, and I've yet to hear something positive about it.

Ebert's review makes it sounds unintentionally hilarious. I might have to rent this on DVD.

Not surprised by this. This movie just looks lame.

Ebert's review of LXG was nearly the same one he wrote for Charlie's Angels 2, yet he gave that three stars.


Hmm, what could it have been about Charlie's Angels 2 that appealed to Ebert more?

I'm boycotting this movie. I refuse to see this butchery of one of the greatest comics to come out since Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.

Interesting.... Both reviews pretty much state that the film has some redeeming qualities (the interplay between Dorian and Mina and onset of old age for Quatermain and Nemo). I wonder who's to blame for these things being subdued. Connery or Norrington? I know the rumours claimed that Norrington was too meticulous for Connery and Connery edited the finished product.... I'm curious to see Norrington's cut of thismore than ever. Hopefully there's a good movie that can be salvaged in all of this.

I seriously doubt Connery spent anytime "editing" the film or even cared about how it turned out. He's always been an actor for hire, his interest is in his paycheck...not in creating "art."

I understand that, Groucho. That was what was so surprising about the rumour. There was talk that Connery hated how the film was turning out so much that he decided to change it as he saw fit. After all, wasn't it his idea to not make Quatermain a burned out opium addict? I like Connery as an actor but I think a class of egos is what hurt this production the most.

I saw that, Rypro 525. There was another that said it was "a ride worth taking" or something along those lines. Who were they quoting?

I think the funniest thing about the ads for this is the critic blurb: "Connery is in a League of his own!" Uhm, am I the only one who reads this as saying: Connery was decent, but the rest of the cast sucked! ??

This is unfortunate because for the longest time I was looking forward to this movie. As the release date got closer and the reports from the set started to filter down you could tell all was not well in paradise. The trailers definitely don't help--they make the movie look extremely cheesy, which makes me not want to see it. I might give it a rent when it comes out on dvd, but this weekend Pirates will get my money.

I'm not sure what to make of this movie. The comic was great, and it could be a great movie, but I'm not sure what we got was a great movie.

But, even if this movie sucks on ice, it'll still be forgiven for giving me one of my favorite Hollywood quotes of all time:

This makes me want to read the Comic.

It's really too bad that it "apparently" sucks so bad.

I still may see it but not likely.

I can understand Connery not understanding the Matrix, but Lord of the Rings? A group walks a long way to try to destroy a magical ring before it falls into the wrong hands. What's so confusing about that? Even Alex Trebeck could figure THAT out. :)

I thought the quote dealt with Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter...

I don't care what everyone else says, I'm going to see this show tonight or tomorrow.

I dunno. I'm gonna see it this weekend. Unlike everyone else, I don't get the Avengers vibe from the trailer.

Like 'From Hell,' it appears I would be better off just buying the LXG graphic novel.

Whoa whoa whoa.... there was a comic?

Written by the very talented Alan Moore.

I had a bad feeling that this movie would let down fans of the comic, and now it seems that's the case. :(

Yet another reason why I would have a problem seeing LXG.

The first time I saw a trailer for it, and Sean Connery's face appeared on the screen, I yelled something like "We meet again, Trebek..." All I'll ever think of when I see Connery is the parody of him from SNL's celeb jeopardy.

He's one of the few actors to get typecast over a role he's never played.
