Do you guys consider John Turturro to be a good actor?

I have been thinking about this recently. I almost never see him mentioned when favorite actors are being talked about, so i want to know what you guys opinion is about him. Even when The Coen brothers are in the discussion, the main players always are Jeff Bridges, John Goodman or Steve Buscemi, but almost never him.
So do you people rate him as an actor, and if not, why?

I predict this thread will degenerate into a stream of "Big Lebowski" quotes.

i think he's a great actor...........liked him in rounders and of course big lebowski

Borst 07-09-03 02:35 PM

He's been in a lot of movies, I haven't seen that many of them but really like him the ones I did. Rounders he had a small part but played it great, same with Mr. Deeds and Anger Management. Monday Night Mayhem where he played Howard Cosell I thought he was great. And ofcourse the Big Lebowski I loved, "You said it man. Nobody f's with the Jesus."

Degenerate? :p

I like the films that John Turturro is in - unfortunately, he's usually not the most interesting thing on screen... (except for his cameo as Jesus in Lebowski)

For example... Box of Moonlight is one of my favourite movies - but Sam Rockwell completely steals the show... :D

joeydaninja 07-09-03 02:40 PM

Yes, he was awesome in Quiz Show.

TheMadMonk 07-09-03 02:42 PM

Like him enough in the few roles I've seen him in. Lebowski and O Brother come to mind. (But he hosted one of the worst episodes of SNL ever made, imho, but you can't totally blame him; it was a bad year all around for SNL)

marty888 07-09-03 02:58 PM

I don't think I've ever seen him give a bad performance, even in movies that I thought were less than exciting. I was lucky enough to see him in a play last month - and he's as good on stage as he is on film.

MasterCXtreme 07-09-03 03:00 PM

He's an awesome actor. I haven't seen all of his movies, but what I have seen, he did a great job in:

The Big Lebowski
O Brother Where Art Thou?
Anger Management
Mr. Deeds

I still have yet to see Barton Fink, but I hear he did a great job in that.

He isn't one of the greatest actors of all time, so thats why he isn't talked about often. But he sure is a wonderful actor. In my opinion, he isn't even that mainstream. There are A LOT of people out there who don't know who he is.

Long story short.... yes I consider him to be a great actor.

wendersfan 07-09-03 03:01 PM

Do I think he's a great actor? The man was Barton Fink, fer crissakes!

Also, his performance as Bernie Bernbaum in Miller's Crossing was among the finest I've ever seen.

NCMojo 07-09-03 03:04 PM

John Turturro is probably the most overlooked great actor in Hollywood today. Miller's Crossing was the first film to come to mind, with Quiz Show a close second.

Stoolie 07-09-03 03:09 PM

I think Turturro is a great actor and capable of elevating a movie above mediocrity. He's like a good basketball player: great on his own but also makes the team a lot better.

agree on both choices.

mwj 07-09-03 03:33 PM

See Miller's Crossing for your answer. He is fantastic in that movie.

Big Boy Laroux 07-09-03 03:48 PM

he was amazing in "the search for one-eyed jimmy"

"i see you dancing, joe head!"

nice_skis 07-09-03 03:52 PM

I love his acting. I discovered him in "Do the right thing" and have been following his carreer ever since. His work with Ethan and Joel Coen is what defines great acting in the 90's IMHO.

RyoHazuki 07-09-03 04:56 PM

Great actor. He was the only saving grace for the godawful Mr. Deeds. "Very, very sneaky, sir."

Wasn't that the episode where they did Taxi Driver: The Musical? That sketch was great.

ArchibaldTuttle 07-09-03 05:53 PM

he's great but I don't see him getting more than a couple more staring roles tops if he stays in the hollywood system, of the maybe 10 or so movies that I have seen him in he has played bit parts except for quiz show and barton fink, I hope I am wrong

that said I am excited about this movie I found on imdb, assuming Turturro has a big part, and who doesn't love Bill Murray

Plot Summary for
Squid and the Whale, The (2004)

The patriarch (Bill Murray) of an eccentric Brooklyn family claims to once have been a great novelist, but he has settled into a teaching job. When his wife (Laura Linney) discovers a writing talent of her own, jealousy divides the family, leaving two teenage sons to forge new relationships with their parents. Linney's character begins dating her younger son's tennis coach (John Turturro). Meanwhile, Murray's character has an affair with the student his older son is pursuing.

Degenerate and the big lebowski should never, I repeat, NEVER be mentioned in the same sentence ever again!

Having said that, a certain actor who I happen to like very much, Full of talent, also a good director, played a degenerate in a certain film that I happen to quote constantly.

"Don't $%!@ with the jesus!"

TCG 07-09-03 07:43 PM

I cant remember having seen Turturro underperform. He was the best parts of Quiz Show and Mr. Deeds.

"Do the Right Thing"
"State of Grace"
"Box of Moonlight"
"Barton Fink"

Got a lot of quality films to his credit... I think he is a very solid actor. Highly underrated.

Bloody brilliant.

One of those guys that will eventually get a sympathy oscar.
