Perhaps if you meant what movies did bad enough or were not critically received well enough for a sequel, I can think of a few -- the remake of "Planet Of The Apes" is one, and it's possible "Hulk" will be another.

Was anybody champing at the bit for a sequel to "La Bamba"?

I think he might mean movies where the major character dies at the end.....which would make that a list of spoilers if I'm right.

Alien 3 , at least it should have been! Hell, Aliens should have been if I had know the direction the series would take after that point.

While it obviously screamed for a sequel, the original Planet of the Apes seemed like it had a perfect ending. That last shot pretty much told you all you needed to know and was a great twist ending for the story.

Of course he's wrong, Final Destination had a sequel with only one character return, and most of those movies listed had at least one main character surviving. At the least, the writers could always put all new characters into the same setting or situation, such as Carrie 2. In fact, if Carrie 2 could be made, pratically any film can have a sequel.

Profit = sequel. That's always been the formula. Hell, Paramount was trying to figure out a Titanic 2 for a while.

Given the subject matter for ON THE BEACH, there never was, or could have been, any planned sequel to be cancelled.

I think he was trying to get people's opinion on movies that left no room open for a sequel. While I can't say I agree with all of his choices, I believe that's what he meant.

I would never underestimate studios when it comes to profit though. No matter how implausible making a sequel may be, if they think it will net them big bucks they'll jump on it.

I still REALLY want to check out The Changeling after hearing Danol rave about it a bit ago.

You can be sure that there is a crack team of writers working on scenarios for a Titanic sequel as we speak...

Don't forget, if all else fails... there's always the PREQUEL! Everyone loves a PREQUEL!

Don't bash danols threads - he's one of the only people here whose posts make you *think*

I would have thought Miike's Dead or Alive would be the end all since... (oh just rent it, you'll see what I mean) but two sequels followed nonetheless.

Lost in Space - Ravaged by critics and a box office bomb cancelled this potential franchise.

Waterworld - Logistics will never warrant a sequel to this one.

I don't know if this counts, but Masters of the Universe was supposed to be followed by Masters of the Universe II: The Cyborg. When the original tanked theatrically, the in-pre-production sequel was repurposed into the much-more-successful Cyborg, which still plays on TV under its original title.

U.S. Marshalls. Supposedly TLJ was going to have his own franchise. Too bad. I was watching The Fugitive last night and his character is still by far the best work he has done. A franchise around him wasn't a bad idea, it was the execution that was bad.

Well, I just saw Mulholland Drive for the first time last night and I had a Danol thread moment when I shut it off.
BTW, great movie... we stayed up till 3:00 AM talking it about and rewatching most of it (damn lack of chapter stops).
