When oscar mixes up lead and supporting roles.

What are the occassions when oscar has mixed lead and supporting roles?

Example:

Ordinary People - Timothy Hotton winner best supporting actor when he was the lead.

*EDITED TO MAKE CORRECTION - Ooops, I was wrong about Platoon so I changed my example.

1995:

Pulp Fiction: Sam Jackson was nominated for best lead, although he was only in half the movie.

Actually, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. He lost to Martin Landau, who received a token career achievement Oscar that year.

One of the most famous instances I can think of is Marlon Brando winning Best Actor for The Godfather and Al Pacino being nominated in the supporting category even though the latter had more screentime.

Also, I was always bugged by Tommy Lee Jones winning supporting actor Oscar for The Fugitive when he likely had just as much screentime as Harrison Ford. But if WB had pushed him as a lead actor, he never would've won.

Does anyone else think Kate Hudson was in Almost Famous enough to be up for an Oscar in the leading actress category?

Platoon - Tom Berenger and Willen DaFoe were nominated for best lead actor. Not taking anything away from Berenger and DaFoe, I thought that their performances were great but they should have been nominated for best supporting actor. Charlie (oops! Charles) Sheen was the lead in that film.
They actually were nominated for best supporting actor. Everyone's facts are mixed here

Oscar doesn't mix up anything, its the studio's that push actors for a certain category.

Much like sports, Oscar races are all about match-ups, you want your actor in the best category where he has a chance to win.

Let's say ..

Julianne Moore in The Hours -> should be in leading, don't you think?

Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago -> should be in leading too.

Exactly. It always baffles me that people think the Academy makes this decision.

Steve Buscemi was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in Ghost World when he was the leading man of the film. I guess he was too esoteric to the judges to rate a Best Actor nomination.

No, I think Rene was the rightful leading actress in Chicago.

Also I think, Richard Gere would have been supporting, since he doesn't really have a big part for chicago.

Morgan Freeman getting nominated for the Best Actor in Shawshank. Dubious at best, despite his narration, I always considered him support to Robbins.

In fact, Sam Jackson should have been nominated as best actor. His was the stronger performance, he had a chance at beating Gump, Travolta didn't.

Also, Jackson had more lines, Travolta had more screen time, so really either one could be considered the lead actor.
