Night of the living dead
Dawn of the Dead
Day of the Dead
Zombie
Let Sleeping Corpes Lie
Plague of the zombies
Shock Waves(Unlike most zombie films and a matter of taste).
Hell of the living dead(I know some think it's beyond terrible)
Burial Ground
Grapes of Death
A few of my favorites for a start.

Avoid:
Zombie Lake
Oasis of the Zombies(I somewhat enjoy parts of it, but if you don't like zombie films you will hate it.)
Zombie Cult Massacre
I Zombie
Zombie Hunger
Zombie Brigade

Yup, ditto.

But for someone who has never watched them before. I would start with the original NOTLD, then the remake, & then go on to other from there.

Return of the Living Dead is good also in its own ways,it sorta pokes fun at zombie flicks and makes for a few good laughs, some hate it but I would at least rent it.

By the way a great list there 8)

Return of the Living Dead is my favorite, it's funny, scary, and has a very cool soundtrack. Seriously, I think mine cost $9.99 at Best Buy. Pick it up if you're looking for a good zombie flick. Avoid part 3 though, and part 2 isnt out on DVD till next year.

Don't forget Dead Alive.

I like Return of the Living Dead 3. It uses themes intended for Day of the Dead before it got its budget slashed.

On my top 10 faves of all genres is Dawn of the Dead. Night of the Living Dead is not far behind.

Those two are easily the best Zombie movies for me.

Day of the Dead didn't do that much for me.

The 90's version of Night of the Living Dead was kinda fun.

I recently posted my top five list in this thread in the DVD forum, but here it is again.

Evil Dead 2
Dead Alive
Re-Animator
Return of the Living Dead
Evil Dead

And also I just recently watched Lucio Fulci's The Beyond (aka Seven Doors of Death), and enjoyed it overall. Recommended for gore fans. The effects were laughably bad (the spider scene), but it was a fun movie.

I recently Netflixed Deathdream. It was directed by Bob Clark, who did the original Black Christmas. I am not a huge aficionado of zombie movies, but I thought it was decent. The sequence with doctor really creeped me out.

Add to the avoid list:
Zombie Holocaust

You see more cannibals in that than anything else.

One of my all-time favorites isn't really bloody or gory but is probably the richest in atmosphere and noir: Val Lewton's (1943) I Walked With A Zombie. The night scene in the cane fields is striking.

"Dawn of the Dead" (1978) & "Shaun of the Dead" are two of the best in the genre. Others really don't even compare.

For a zombie movie that is so bad that it's good, try: Redneck Zombies.

Night of the Comet also features some zombies.

And, for a different take, there's always Dead & Buried, Serpent and the Rainbow and White Zombie.
