Whats the appeal of Good Burger for many of you?

I saw the movie a few years ago, it was alright but nothin spectacular. Cut to last year, I hear through various posts that this movie has some huge dvdtalk cult like following, and I was wondering what everyone see's in it.

PixyJunket 05-27-03 11:33 AM

Because it's All That.

Brain Stew 05-27-03 11:36 AM

I don't think anyone here has actually seen the movie, they just like to laugh at how ridiculously bad it looks :). I don't think anyone wants to see it either, would probably kill the magic.

ASSumption.

I've seen it several times. I have the laserdisc, and in 30 minutes I'll have the DVD. I'll watch it TWICE tonight for sure. Once a real viewing and I'll probably thrown it on in the background while cleaning up from last night's Beer/BBQ party.

There may be some people "in on the joke" that have not watched it, but most of them are "in on the joke" casue they've seen it and loved it.

In fact, one member who works at a video stores says they play it once a day at the shop.

Anyone who would say such a thing obviously didn't understand the movie. Clearly it's philosophical meditation on the nature of epistemology, symbolizing ...

Oh wait. Wrong movie.

I'll let someone else field this one on a more serious note. In the meantime, here's my answer:

Where to begin...the cinematography, dialogue, lighting, costume design, character development, special effects, etc.???

I am particularly mesmerized by the on-screen chemistry between Kenan and Kel. The personal internal conflict that each endures as the story progesses is heartwarming, to say the least. There's one scene in particular where the two are just standing there talking - the lighting, dialogue, their mannerisms - everything just clicks. Think Abbott and Costello. Think Martin and Lewis. Think Lucy and Desi. And now, we have the perfect buddy duo for the next millennium.

In addition, Good Burger is one of those rare masterpieces that's hard to categorize - action, drama, comedy...the film defies all labels. Simply amazing.

To this day I'm shocked that the film (for whatever reason) is not ranked among the American Film Institute's Top 100 of all-time, but I'm willing to bet that it had to have been a solid "101" on their listing.

Of course, Kangaroo Jack has come out since the original rankings were established, so it probably got bumped down to 102 - those b**tards!

Any movie with Sinbad in it HAS to be good, right.. right?

(realizes he's not helping the arguement)..

matome 05-27-03 12:48 PM

None at all

jarofclay73 05-27-03 01:32 PM

I think we just love to say, "When's the Good Burger: Criterion Collection coming out?"

I've seen it on cable and I won't be getting it on DVD. But that doesn't mean we won't stop talking about it! ;)

Damn right, Sinbad's hilarious! While Good Burger isn't as funny or good as Houseguest, it is nonetheless entertaining as a silly, good-natured comedy.

Highly quotable, entirely engaging, and with a lot more depth than you might assume from the surface, Good Burger is a whopper of a movie!

Jackskeleton 05-27-03 01:43 PM

It's one of those internet jokes. People wanted Criterion collections of a lot of cheap movies.. Good burger is not one of them. Good burger deserves Criterion Collection status for every reason around. How could you not want it. Imagen the extra's on it. the devine treatment that it deserves. :p

we just like to make fun of it.,

It amazes me how this joke has evolved. It started years ago, then the newbies came in (the ’01-’02 newbies) and eventually caught on, and then they started reviving the joke as if they were the ones who started it. Now the ‘03 generation of newbies has joined and they don't even get the joke! Incredible!

To be honest, I don't think I ever laughed so hard at a forum thread as the one containing the mock Criterion covers for "Good Burger" Esp. the one with the Criterion logo, movie title, and the picture of a pile of *****. Priceless.

MrPeanut 05-27-03 05:01 PM

whether it's sarcasm or not, you have to love DDD for putting up banner ads for it here

fumanstan 05-27-03 05:04 PM

Worst running joke EVER. I'm fairly new to these forums and i roll my eyes everytime the good burger joke is tossed around.

jfoobar 05-28-03 12:16 AM

It's the best film since Necessary Roughness. 'Nuf said.

That's a bold statement from somebody with "The One" in thier collection. ;)

BuckeyeDawg 05-28-03 09:49 AM

I'd take House Party any day of the week, and twice on the weekends...

I get the feeling, that for many, GoodBurger is one of those "guilty pleasures", like Joe Dirt is for me.

We all have them, that film that no one wants to admit to liking, or having even watched, but every time it's on, you find yourself watching it, and laughing at the same stupid jokes, even though you know what to expect.

Have to admit, Shar Jackson is HOT

p.s. Have only seen bits and pieces of Goodburger, and it was all I could stand. Those two guys voices grate on me, like nails to the brain.

I haven’t seen this in years. I was a big fan of Kenan and Kel back in the day. Both on Kenan & Kel and All That. I might pick it up for nostalgic reasons.

Not to mention that it features Abe Vigoda.

Sadly, when he passed in 2016, the MTV headine read: "ABE VIGODA, WHO PLAYED OTIS IN ‘GOOD BURGER,' HAS DIED"
Abe Vigoda, Who Played Otis In ?Good Burger,' Has Died - MTV

A friend of mine has a small part in this. He’s the only reason I’ve seen it. I was a couple years beyond watching Nick when it came out. Give me an Out of Control or Today’s Special movie!
