The Man From Elysian Fields

I watched The Man From Elysian Fields today. Wow - what a surprise! It had a limited theatrical run, but I remember holding off on seeing it 'till the DVD came out.

Great performances all-around (especially Jagger) and smart dialogue are what had me hooked from the beginning.

Anyone else seen this?

Yeah. I just watched it for the first time last night, coincidentally. I thought the story was a little contrived and the ending was kind of predictable, but the dialogue was very good, and, as you wrote, Jagger was the stand-out in a cast that was uniformly excellent.

I liked it, though trying to describe the film to a friend makes it sound unwatchable.

A very skillfully directed film. The director knew how easily the concept could slide into absurdity or melodrama, so he chose to create an unspoken mood rather than tire us with emotional fireworks.

I wasn't a fan of the acting, but I can't say that I've ever been a fan of Andy Garcia. I know he is well liked by many, but as a matter of personal taste I dislike his choices. I feel like I see a metronome on his forehead projecting the exact beats he is trying to follow in a scene.

All said, I was a fan of the movie. Even appreciated the ending. Though it finally succums to the obvious, it does make an effort to drag it out through some interesting scenes before giving us the inevitable.

I also liked it.

Mick Jagger was surprisingly very good and the girl from Rushmore was very good as well.

I'm not an Andy Garcia fan and the story got shaky at the end, but overall I really enjoyed it.
