Is Rowan Atkinson really THAT popular outside of N.America?

I just noticed that Rowan Atkinson's last two movies, Mr. Bean and Johnny English, both did over $100 million in business before ever reaching North America. That seems incredibly huge and indicates more than just a UK audience. Is he really that popular around the world?

I imagine Mr. Bean is a pretty popular character around the world because he doesn't talk much...no language barrier to that kind of humor.

He is actually a very very clever guy, Bean and Johnny English are just pandering to what the public want.

Just check out Blackadder for a taste of his genius

The featurette in "The Whole Bean" talks about how he is rather popular around the world.

You'd be surprised at how popular he is IN North America.

Check out the DVD Forum for the Mr. Bean Box Set outrage...

But to be honest, he is truly a gift to comedy. The man is an absolute genius. See some of his standup... and another vote for Blackadder.

He was very popular here in Asia too. But I guess I'm out of the majority.

Rowan Atkinson is a great comedic performer

It's too bad most just know him from Mr. Bean.

There actually are many many people who are "superstars" in Europe and/or throughout the world who are barely known in North America. Johnny Hallyday and Cliff Richard are two who have been popular over the years, yet few people on this side of the pond really know tham.

I love Rowan's work, especially when he is not Mr. Bean.

His one-man sketch shows are about the most brilliant comedy I have ever seen.

It'd be great if they would collect his standup on dvd. I've only seen the one on comedy central -- edited -- but it's absolutely brilliant.
