Dances with Wolves Drama or Western??

Should Dances with Wolves be considered a Drama or a Western?

myrdh 05-21-03 12:50 PM

Hmmm..Drama? For some reason, I went straight to the Drama section yesterday looking for it and it was there. I don't think there's a Western section at Circuit City.

So I vote Drama

SCHMEGGA 05-21-03 01:12 PM

To me, it just doesn't seem to be a true western. I can't explain it. It just doesn't seem like it.

eedoon 05-21-03 01:18 PM

Both. But it has more drama than western.

weldon 05-21-03 01:30 PM

It's listed as a Western in every online store I checked (and I checked about five). Muze, the company that provides the data used by many stores, lists it as Western with sub-genres in Adventure, Drama, Indians, Western, & Wilderness.

I say it is a Western first.

uteotw 05-21-03 01:40 PM

Western. Out West. Indians, bad white man, frontier, etc.

Geofferson 05-21-03 01:54 PM

Tough call, most Western's are Drama's after all. This one feels more Drama than Western though.

gutwrencher 05-21-03 02:20 PM

it's not filed in my western section....but right next to it-wink-.

:) .... You forgot buffalo. :)

shanester 05-21-03 05:10 PM

It's more in the "dramatic epic" genre like say Lawrence Of Arabia, Gladiator or Braveheart

PS I can't believe I answered this lame thread..:)

TomOpus 05-21-03 05:34 PM

To me, it's a drama that takes place during a "western" time frame.

It's almost like Aliens. Is it a Sci/Fi or Action movie?

Max Bottomtime 05-21-03 06:36 PM

As Col. Potter said on an episode of M*A*S*H, it's got the three things that make a great Western; horses, cowboys and horses.

actually, it's a monster movie.-wink-:D

Samuel 05-21-03 07:16 PM

Epic! :)

It's got action, drama ,humor, romance ,war, and takes place in the west.

brombie 05-21-03 08:57 PM

Drama that's set in western setting. Just like Blazing Saddles a comedy with a western setting.

D-Ball 05-22-03 01:21 AM

Since it helped revive the western genre, I consider it a western.

keith71 05-22-03 06:11 AM

I know this is kinda off topic, but I've never seen this movie in my life(yes, I am over 16 years old),and I was wondering if this movie is at least worth a rental.
Why have I never seen such a well known, Oscar winning film? I dunno, Kevin Costner just annoys me. Plus, it still irks me that Goodfellas lost Best Picture and Best Director(!) to this movie and that annoying Costner. Did I mention Costner annoys me?
So, can someone recommend this flick?

Despite all the hundreds of posts about this movie in dozens of threads across all the various forums here, despite the fact that this is the second or third release on DVD, despite all the awards this movie has won, I doubt anyone will recommend this movie. I think people just like talking about it out of boredom, not because they actually have any interest in it.

Sorry, I've been super busy at work this week and need to catch up on my sarcasm quota. :)

And no, I can't recommend it without knowing anything else about your tastes in movies. But I loved it when I saw it.

Big Kevin Costner fan? :)

Seriously, if you hate him that much, it's hard for me to imagine you liking this movie--I haven't seen it in a while, but I can't think of a scene without him in it. I didn't find him annoying when I first saw this, and liked it a lot. I'll have to see if that still holds true since now I, too, find him really annoying.

If this movie isn't a western I don't know what is.

Groucho 05-22-03 12:20 PM

Both. Films can be more than one genre. It's not black and white. However, since that wasn't a choice I voted "Western" since it directly deals with the themes of expansion.

Speaking of black and white, that's one of my criticisms of the film: everything is black and white...

All Sioux = Good
All Pawnee = Bad
All White Men = Bad (except Costner and the chick who was raised by the Sioux)

It's pretty ridiculous.

 It revived the western genre? I must have blinked and missed that...

I could probably count on my fingers the number of westerns released in the past 20 years.

In the few years following Dances with Wolves we got movies such as Unforgiven, Last of the Mohicans, Tombstone, City Slickers, Maverick, Wyatt Earp, Legends of the Fall, and Dead Man. All of them were great movies, well except for Wyatt Earp. During the 10 years prior to Dances with Wolves, the only decent westerns that I can think of are Silverado, Pale Rider, and the Lonsome Dove mini-series. So I think it's fair to say that Dances with Wolves revived or at least helped revive the western genre.

JonTurner 05-22-03 01:58 PM

At the Circuit City where I work, we filed it under Drama, and yes, we do have a western section.

However, sometimes I'm just perplexed by whoever on the corporate level decides to file these things in certain sections - here are a few examples off the top of my head:

Signs - Action
The Last Castle - Drama
Lord of the Rings: FOTR - Sci Fi
Lord of the Rings: FOTR Extended Version - Action
Notting Hill - Drama
Iris - Comedy

and after having Amelie in Drama for the first 9 months or so, someone in corporate finally switched it to Comedy. In the same manner, Final Destination was just recently finally switched from Drama to Horror.

So that said, DON'T TRUST CC's FILING SYSTEM! :)

evanmd 05-22-03 02:07 PM

I don't even have a western section anyways. but if I did I wouldn't put it there, I would still put it in my Disney section I mean Drama. :)
