Most Annoying Child Movie Character

What's that old Hollywood idiom -- "Never work with dogs or kids?" Most kids in movies and sitcoms are obnoxious brats, but some are infinitely more annoying than others. Here are three of my least favorite characters. (Note that I am not criticizing the actor -- just the character they played.)

Johnathan Ke Quan, "Short Round",
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Usually, Steven Spielberg is quite good with kids, but Short Round has that typical "smartass" Hollywood kid thing going throughout the entire film. It's a bad sign when you're rooting for one of the characters to get his heart cut out...

Freddie Boath, "Alex O'Connell"
The Mummy Returns

There is a special level of hell reserved for some screen children... and on that plane of hell, Alex O'Connell is their god. The only thing more annoying than a know-it-all whiz kid is a know-it-all whiz kid with a penchant for getting into catastrophe.

Anna Paquin, "Flora McGrath"
The Piano

Thank God Anna Paquin turned into a hot X-Men babe, because her feature film debut as Flora, the whiniest member of the whiniest film ever made, certainly did her nothing to win my heart. Yes, yes, I know she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for this role... but it was horribly undeserved. Heck, if you can get an Oscar for playing a whining sniveling obnoxious brat, then Joan Rivers should have a shelf full.

Spoiler:
What does it say when the child actor is drowning, being pulled into the depths of the ocean weighted down by a massive piano roped to her ankle... and you feel sorry for the piano?

Those are three of my favorite least-favorite child characters. What are some of yours?

what about the most annoying of all. The kid from Problem Child.

Groucho 05-19-03 09:36 AM

How about that brat from The Sixth Sense? He was annoying enough in the trailers that I skipped the movie altogether.

Ummmm, Jake Lloyd anyone?

I thank God on a regular basis that the little punk will probably never make another film.

Also Courtland Mead aka Danny Torance from Stephen King's The Shining.

I agree, Jake Lloyd ruined Episode I.

javanut 05-19-03 10:32 AM

Haley Jo Osment. Hands down.

(I kinda like Johnathan Ke Quan, if only for his delivery of the line, "Mr. Jones! Mr. Jones!")

Panda Phil 05-19-03 10:43 AM

Oh wait, I can't believe I forgot the two demons in my own personal Hell, Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richards.
((I assume these are their names. I only had time for a quick search on IMDB))

Anyway, the wretched little brats in the first Jurassic Park who put the entire casts lives in danger with their stupidity, and constant whining, screaming and snivelling. Thanks to them I've never been able to watch that movie again. Thank you sooooo bloody much Mr Spielberg.

Johnathan Lipnicki

and

Haley Jo - I just shudder when thinking of that 80-hour performance in A.I.

Tyler_Durden 05-19-03 12:00 PM

Oh god... #1 spot on my list goes something called "J. Evan Bonifant" in Blues Brothers 2000. :whofart:

yecul 05-19-03 12:18 PM

Ok, it's a bad movie example, but...

The girl from Lost in Space. Bleh. She might not qualify as a "child" but she pissed the hell out of me.

Not only highly annoying, but maybe the ugliest kid ever on screen.

 Good choice. Kevin Corcoran was just getting too old to do the "cute kid act" by 1960.

TheAllPurposeNothing 05-19-03 01:42 PM

Aileen Quin is "Annie!"

Blecchhhh!

resinrats 05-19-03 02:06 PM

McCauly Culkin. I hated that punk and rooted for the robbers to beat the crap out of him in Home Alone.
Best Culkin scene, where he drops off the cliff in The Good Son. SPLAT!!!

matome 05-19-03 02:08 PM

Jake Lloyd - Phantom Menace
The son in the U.S. version of The Ring

BernieStolar 05-19-03 06:26 PM

Jesus, do every child annoy you in movies? I think that's the point, they are supposed to annoy people, that's what kids are all about.

Personally, I have nothing against child actors as some of them can be very talented.

I don't find any child actors annoying.
You should respect them since they are only kids.
