The last few months have been pretty weak.

Movies I've seen in the last few months:
Spun
X2
Identity
Spirited Away

In terms of mainstream movies Holes really surprised me. Great cast, quirky story, very entertaining.

limited release
-Ten Abbas Kiarostami film in which ten stories/conversations revolve around a Tehran woman and the various passengers in her car. Naturalistic performances and 'scripted' dialogue reveal multi faceted characteristics and revelations of the lead characters.

Upcoming

-Whale Rider - having won various audience awards at various festivals, I expect this to have moderate success. Fascinating story and commendable performance from lead actress Keisha Castle-Hughes.

-Dracula: Pages from A Virgin's Diary - visually stunning retelling of Bram Stoker's story told in ballet and impressionistic cinematic styles.

Festival screening
-Onibus 174 - unrelenting documentary depicting what happened in Rio de Janeiro on June 12th 2000, when bus 174 was taken by an armed young man and myriad attributes that contributed to the events that led up to this act. Rivetting 'essential-viewing' docu that should not be missed.

What does "bog down" mean?

There is actually VERY LITTLE out right now that's of any quality:

Holes- best studio film this year
Better Luck Tomorrow- mediocre, but worth seeing
Rivers and Tides: Andy Goldsworthy Sculpting in Time- essential
Bend it Like Beckham- cute brain-dead fun; good for kids
The Pianist is still around if you havn't seen one of the best films in years
Ghosts of the Abyss- essential

Don't waste your life at X-Men 2
A Mighty Wind is just average
Phone Booth only if you've seen everything else
Lilya-4-Ever is a stinker

The Nature Boy 05-13-03 01:58 PM

City of God really stands out as something special, but it is subtitled foreign, but a phenomenal film. Must see for me.

And in the last 3 months, I caught Confessions of a Dangerous Mind 2nd run, which is out of theatres now but supposedly set for one more run at an audience in the summer. If you missed that, I'd definately recommend that one.

I'd say Ten and Divine Intervention.

Holes and X2 are easily the cream of the crop so far. Holes is one of those movies that will surprise you.

I saw Down With Love today and loved it. Actually had a lot more fun at this one than I did at The Matrix Reloaded last week (and I loved that one as well). I had a smile on my face from the very beginning and thought it was quite funny.

XMen 2

Better Luck Tomorrow is a great little indie flick.

X-Men 2 is nice follow-up to the original.

A Mighty Wind is a big disappointment, boring and
just not very funny.

I enjoy Christopher Guest and his comedy troupe, but I think
he made a wrong turn with this one.

Exactly for me too, except I did not see it today, I saw it last Saturday, day after I saw The Matrix Reloaded. Down With Love is very funny.

X2 and Matrix Reloaded :)

Hokeyboy 05-24-03 04:52 PM

In the past 2-3 months, the only movies that are absolute must-sees are Bend It Like Beckham and Habla Con Ella. But X2 and Matrix Reloaded really should be seen on the big screen.

MrN 05-25-03 01:55 AM

yeah, Talk to her aka "Hable Con Ella" is an absolute must-see. DVD comes out this Tuesday.

BassDude 05-27-03 01:04 AM

Another vote for Identity but I don't think it has to be seen in the theaters. DVD/your home theater should do just fine.

RyoHazuki 05-27-03 07:57 PM

Dreamcatcher all the way!

neiname 05-27-03 08:07 PM

28 Days Later must be seen on the big screen and where it's dark
