When did "Jumped the shark" jumped the shark?

There were a couple of threads recently about when so and so jumped the shark. I think it's hilarious for three reasons.

1 - To "jump the shark" is so old a reference that unless your a tv geek addicted to TVland, you probably don't know what it means. And in most recent cases, the author of the messages used it in an inappropriate way.

2 - Sometimes (and more often than not) the question is about somebody who should have just dived into the shark tank without ever attempting to have a movie carreer.

3 - Imagining Sylvester Stallone with his "sad-Rambo" face, jumping across a bunch of sharks in a swimming pool on a motorbike somehow makes me laugh my a$$ off everytime.

Still, the question could be interresting... I guess.

So what about a real "Jump the shark" question?

Like when did the James Bond movies ceased to be interresting?

Why did they have to keep on producing Superman movies in the 80's?

What the heck was Batman and Robin about?

Who wanted to see The land that time forgot 2 in the first place?

Should they cancel Saturday night live before it spawns itself into another bad movie franchise?

Do you think there would be a necessity for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle 4?

And has Mr Bean ever jumped the shark?

About the time I turned 15 or so. I cannot remember the last time I was genuinely entertained by a new Bond film. The older ones, the ones I grew up with, I can still watch, but only because I grew up with them. The new ones are, in a word, vapid.

Why did they have to keep on producing Superman movies in the 80's?
Where greed and stupidity hold hands, Superman 3 grazes.

What the heck was Batman and Robin about?
Dunno. I never got past the second one and it was painful enough.

Who wanted to see The land that time forgot 2 in the first place?
Dunno.

Should they cancel Saturday night live before it spawns itself into another bad movie franchise?
Nah, I would be perfectly happy to still see SNL on TV to the day I die. I rarely watch it, but I think it is a more than worthwhile institution to continue to have around.

Do you think there would be a necessity for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle 4?
Necessity? Of course not. Did 3 make any money?

And has Mr Bean ever jumped the shark?
I must admit that I still do not sufficiently understand the expression enough to be able to answer this question.

OK... what expression would you use in place of "jump the shark"? "When did his career suddenly enter into limbo?" "Where id he go wrong?" I used the phrase in one of my threads because:

A) it seems to be a pretty widely understood catch-phrase

B) I could not find a more suitable expression

Admitedly, the phrase is somewhat confusing. Is it the pinnacle, or is it the pits, or is it simply the beginning of the end? I chose the last definition... otherwise, the post might have read, "What was Sly Stallone's Worst Movie" which begs an entirely different question...

I'd like to know when the phrase "When did 'jump the shark' jump the shark?" jumped the shark.

I didn't come up with this term "Jump the Shark", a certain user in the boards, not me, came up with it, I forgot who it was.

The phrase is one that I really don't bother dealing with. it sounds lame and gets me from posting in said thread because to me, jump the shark has jumped so many sharks as it is.

Jumped the shark has kicked the bucket, flossed the pony, waxed the kitten, baked the dog.

Bake the dog. Now there's an expression that should catch on

Well, it makes about as much literal sense as "jumped the shark." But then, to each their own. After all, there's more than one way to rip the spleen from an aardvark!

According to the owner of this site:

The term "jump the shark" was coined by my college roommate for 4 years, Sean J. Connolly, in Ann Arbor, Michigan back in 1985. This web site, book, film, and all other material surrounding shark jumping, are hereby dedicated to "the Colonel."

That's right. Clearly, no actual person invented the phrase "jump the shark:" it was handed down by God as part of the Ten Commandments.

Jumping the Shark is a reference to Happy Days and I have little doubt that this guy (or his roommate) came up with the idea. Even if he didn't come up with it, I sure never heard of it before his website and Howard Stern appearances.

Certainly the "idea" of what Jumping the Shark represents has been around for a while (like shows bringing in the "cute new kid" when the ratings slump and the cast is too old), but no one had given it a name.

Let's just say he "popularized" the term

Originally when I invented them, they were just the "Nine Commandments", but...
