When Did Sly Stallone's Career "Jump The Shark"?
 

In other words, when did it all go wrong?

It's a toss up between "Stop or my Mom..." and "Over the Top".

Personally I've never cared about Stallone (or any of those big action "stars" that were spawned in the 1980s).....or about most of the crappy films they churned out.

The movie where he jumped isn't on the list. Since he never made a good film after Rocky, then it is indeed Rocky that was the film where he jumped.

The two movies I'd say played the biggest part in the shark-jumping aren't on this poll -- It started to jump with "Rambo III," which besides being a crap movie was also a rather surprising bomb when it came out. Then I have to say it jumped for good with "Rocky V," an unneeded sequel that wasn't exactly godawful, but it certainly indicated Sly was running out of freseh ideas.

I voted for Judge Dredd. Here's why:

After "Over the Top" he made "Lock UP" and "Tango & Cash" which are enjoyable schlok.

Now while "Rocky V", "Oscar" & Stop! Or My Mom" are all bad movies, "Cliffhanger" & Demolition Man are actually quite good!

I think the real answer might be "The Specialist" but it wasn't on the list. His next film, "Judge Dredd" however was. After that there are some watchable movies but none that I consider "good":

Cop Land
Get Carter (3 years between this & his last movie, ouch)
Driven
Eye See You (direct to video)
Avenging Angelo (direct to video)
Spy Kids 3-D (stick a fork in him, he's done!)

Not on the poll, but I'd say that he may have jumped after Nighthawks (1981), but I did enjoy Rocky III (1982), so it would have to be after that.

Cop Land (1997) was his brief return to real movies, but it was all too brief.

He may be a third rate character actor, but how can anyone really deny that he had a career? He got $20M for a film. That says something even if it isn't about his acting ability.

I'll go with Judge Dredd on this. I loved Stallone in all the Rocky's except for 5... Demolition Man is a guilty pleasure. I think how Dredd bombed was the biggest factor in his career.

"Eye See You" and "Avenging Angelo" failed and never released because theaters weren't interested in buying the film nationally so they sent them straight to video.

So considering that the remake of "Get Carter" was a success!!!!! And "Eye See You" and "Avenging Angelo" were two straight to video releases, then Sly's career starting going downhill when the movie "Driven" came out. Since "Driven" was such a huge flop/bomb after the successful "Get Carter", "Driven" gets my vote. Sly's career had been dead since the movie "Driven".

It really saddens me that people think "Spy Kids 3-D" is going to fail just because Sly is going to be in it. Spy Kids is a very popular franchise for children. Sly likes kids and he wants to entertain them too. "Spy Kids 3-D" will be very successful and it will help Sly's career.

Why? The reasons are simple:

1. Spy Kids are popular for children
2. Many adults will see "Spy Kids 3-D" just to see the movie in 3-D even if they don't like Sly. There hasn't been a new movie in 3-D in a LONG TIME!!!!!
3. A lot of adults will see "Spy-Kids 3-D" because they may be huge fans of Sly and Antonio Banderas.

"Spy Kids 3-D" will help bring Sly's career back on track again, I garuntee it. Sly needs to get popular and recognized again before he puts out "Rocky VI" and "Rambo IV". If Sly doesn't bring his career back on track, then no one will care to see either "Rocky VI" or "Rambo IV". Spy Kids is the most popular movie franchise for children and it's just laughable as hell to think it's going to fail just because Sly is playing the main villian. :-/

Yo, Rocky. You are reading the numbers wrong for Get Carter. Since when is 6 million a good opening weekend? Maybe for a low budget indie showing in a few theaters. Not for a big budget film showing on over 2000 screens. And the movie got LESS successful as time went on, not MORE. It dropped off by 66% in its second week!

I do agree, Spy Kids 3d will be Stallone's biggest movie since Cliffhanger most likely. Though I can't say it'll make him a star again, it'll help him out.<br>
Regarding Get Carter, I don't know how you can call that movie successful? It made 6 million opening weekend. That's terrible. With an end gross of around 15 million dollars, it's nothing but a big fat bomb. The failure of that movie and Driven is what caused those other two flicks to end up straight to video more than likely. Stallone is just not bankable anymore. Sky Kids will succeed by being what it is. I'd guess around 80 or 90 million gross for it, but you really won't be able to credit Stallone with that. Personally I like Stallone, he can be quite the entertaining guy. But for some reason he just picks bad movies and these days, everybody seems to know that and stays away from his movies. Because seriously, how many good movies has Stallone been in anyway? While I enjoy some of his older flicks, they were far from "good". Only his Rocky series, and really only the first few, were of any quality. At his height of popularity, 1985, he had Rocy IV and Rambo II. While I enjoy the hell out of both movies, I will not deny that they are in fact...not really that good movies. Good entertainment yes, but they are really dumb.

6 million may be bad but better than nothing, it did better as time went along.


Considering this poll has "Judge Dredd" being the most votes, if you truly think "Judge Dredd" hurt Sly's career, then you are all wrong. :D

"Judge Dredd" was a very successful film since the movie was adapted from a comic book. I find it a very entertaining film. ;)

It is a fact that "Judge Dredd" was a successful movie whether you like it or not.

If I wanted to, I could list the entire filmography of Sly's career and list how much money each movie made, then you can make your judgements on what movies killed Sly's career.

Remember, there is a lesson to be learned when deciding what "movie" killed an actor's career, do your research before posting. :)

If successful means grossing about 40% of the cost of the movie then yeah Judge Dredd was successful.

The budget was 90 million, that's how much it costed to make.

The movie made 34.69 million in the box office and that's very good.

Uh... where in those numbers is Judge Dredd NOT a flop?

Um... clearly you have a dizzying intellect. It cost 90 million, and made back less then half. Let's see... Total Profit = Revenues - Cost... so we get ~35 - 90 = -55. Wow, it was a success!

The only reason you guys are disagreeing that it wasn't a success is because it's a Stallone film.

I'm about to do a list of his most successful films right now. I'll start it and post it in this thread when I'm done.
