Is Treasure Planet Worth Getting?
Of course, that begs the question of if anyone has seen it.
I'll probably get it, simply because it is in the "list" of Disney "classic animated movies".... and I'm collecting those. but I have to wonder if I will enjoy watching it. I tend to enjoy Disney animations, but Atlantis was fairly poor, but I loved Lilo and Stitch. Any thoughts on how this will be? |
Very much so!!! It's no Lilo & Stitch... but it was still quite excellent.
Never quite understood the bad rap this movie got.... |
Since it seems like you're just asking about the movie, moving to Movie Talk.
|
I enjoyed it. Not as much as Atlantis, but its a fun adventure movie. I think the only thing that seperates it from Atlantis is the lack of characterization... i just never got involved with any of the main or supporting characters. But it was still a fun movie. Although seeing as how you didn't like Atlantis, i'm not so sure how you'll like this. I loved Atlanis :)
|
I found it pretty slow and dull myself.
I'd recommend a rental at best. |
I had kinda low expectations going in, and I quite enjoyed it. One of the better films I saw last year, and even though it doesn't have the magic of the early Walt films or the late '80s/early '90s resurgance, it's great fun and I give it my recommendation. I liked it worlds better than Atlantis, which seems to be the film that people compare it to.

I'll let ya know tomorrow.. ;)
|
I liked it, not as much as Lilo and Stitch though. I would say if you didn't like Atlantis much, you might feel the same way about Treasure Planet (I did like TP better).
|
I thought TP was great entertainment. Well worth getting. The Extras aren't too bad either compared to some other Disney DVDs.
|
I loved Atlantis, I liked Treasure Planet. The beautiful animation alone is worth the price though. It's impossible and unfare to compare it to Lilo and Stitch...two completely different types of movies.
|
Big question -- do you have young kids? My kids (ages 4 and 3) loved it, and wanted to watch it over and over.
|
I thought Atlantis was so-so and I thought Lilo was bad. That said, Treasure Planet is worse than both. Total Laputa ripoff, lame characters, main character is a queer looking dork w/ an ear ring, plot is not interesting, David Hyde Pierce needs to stop voicing animated movies, goo-goo dolls song sucks.
Also, for Seeker, you don't HAVE TO buy anything just because it is in the "list" of Disney "classic animated movies". Just because Disney groups it with films like Pinochio and Bambi (films that they couldn't make in a million years with their current pool of animation tallent) doesn't mean it is as good as those or even worthy of being owned. My advice, wait and buy it used for $9.99 at Blockbuster. |
I'm mulling this over too...
I have a 2 year old and I'm collecting all the Disney 'classics' as well.
My wife is an ex-Imagineer and her friends saw TP and said 'save your money'. The DVD came out and I pondered getting it but decided to save my $8 (it's nice having friends who work in Disney Accounting). Now I'm hearing that folks enjoyed it... ...what to do. |
CheapBastid- since you disliked Lilo and Stitch even more than I did, I would guess you would not like Treasure Planet since I thought it was worse than Lilo&Stitch

Buy it! It's a good film. It's no Bambi, Lion King, Little Mermaid, or Beauty & the Beast, but it is an enjoyable film. That's not even taking into account that the animation is some of the most stunning I've ever seen. It would make a great demo.

Don't listen to pdjennings, he loves everything.
Don't listne to Pants, he hates everything. ;) |
I don't think pdjennings likes everything...he just buys everything.. ;) |
I love animation, so I made a trip to the theater to see this, as I try to see most animated movies in the theater. As much as I hoped it would be good, I just found it to be dull, trite, the characters were incredibly lame, and the story held no interest for me at all. Think about it: most people here are freely admitting it isn't as good as other Disney movies that didn't do well. They may have still liked it nonetheless, but it's not as good as what you thought were some of Disney's clunkers. Take heed of that warning.

TP was Crap-Tastic...
|
My neice and I saw TP and we both liked it. I'll probably get it from NetFlix and watch it again.
I'm a sucker for all things animated, though. (Just finished Spirited Away for the fourth time.) |
According to the news, the dvd sales have already topped it's box office take.

I liked Treasure Planet, its no Lion King or Beauty and the Beast, or as good as some recent stuff like Lilo & Stitch, but I don't think its trying to be. Now that aside, the animation is absolutely wonderful and some good moments are in it. I did find the storyline to move kind of clunky and slow in the beginning, but the film picked up in the second half and finished quite nicely. I saw it in the theater in its small run at the boxoffice, and have the dvd, so I would recommend the movie.
|
I watched it last night....have to admit I like it! It's worth $15 at Wal*mart!
