Saving Private Ryan vs. Band of Brothers
Basicly, which one do you think is better. They are both similar in the style of cinnemetography ect, but spr is more battle orriented and bob is more character and story oriented. I'm too early in bob (just finished ep 2), so I can't vote yet.

I voted BOB. SPR was very well made, almost too slick, but I found the characterizations a bit shallow and weak. I much preferred the other WWII move that year, The Thin Red Line.
|
As much as I loved BOB, I voted for both. They are equally as good for different reasons. I think people should definitely see both of them.

Band Of Brothers.

Band of Brothers, by a long show. Saving Private Ryan was only a brief glimpse into that time and the soldiers who fought the war. Band of Brothers was way more indepth, and was much heavier in the characterization of the portrayals.

Not much of a Saving Private Ryan fan. Just never jumped it like all the others. My problem was you didn't get the character depth that some other movies give you. Nor was I awed by the realism SPR had since more or less its been there before, just not quite as in the face as SPR was. I did however absolutely love BoB as it fixed all the problems I had with SPR.

bob, possibly because it's longer, and it covers more of the war

Comparing BoB to SPR is like comparing From The Earth to the Moon to Apollo 13.

I like Band of Brothers much better. I like Saving Private Ryan a lot, but yeah, SPR was a bit too 'polished' at times. BoB is much more fact based, so obviously a real story is gonna be better than a semi-real story.
I think Band of Brothers has more combat than Ryan does. None of it is quite as eleborate as the opening of SPR, but I think they said in the making of BoB that they used more pyrotechnics in the first 3 episodes than they did the whole film of Saving Private Ryan. |
Both. In terms of movie making, Saving Private Ryan made a lot of influences on Band of Brothers. But the story, and more importantly, the characterization on Band of Brothers is much, much better than Saving Private Ryan because it's a fact based story, and it's longer duration.

I love them both, but if I had to choose it'd be BoB.

Yeah there really isn't any comparison. If anything these two pieces should stand together, not be compared. Saving Private Ryan is a great movie that captures the feel of war, but yes, it doesn't have the characterizations that BoB had. Of course, without SPR there would be no BoB. Remember who made Bands of Brothers: Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks were the lead producers on that project. The Apollo 13 comparison was spot on.

i didn't like either.
my favorite war movie recently was When Trumpets Fade, an HBO movie. really good stuff. |

Originally posted by Gdrlv That's why they can't be compared. A ten hour miniseries and a 2 hour movie are not the same thing. Both are WW II dramas produced by Steven Spielberg, using virtually identical production design and cinematography. Even taking into account the advantages BoB has because of length, "Saving Private Ryan" has a weak script and poorly conceived characters. I liked it for what it is, but ultimately it's done in by a weak script. BoB is everythin SPR should have been, but wasn't. |
Love them both - particularly the casts.
|
I haven't seen SPR but I really liked it. I didn't buy BOB about 2 months ago but I watched it, but the way it sounds is it might even be better.

This is a tough one, both are great movies on their own.

I can only put it this way. I would rather own BoB than SPR if I could only own one, and not just because BoB is 5 times longer. |
