One Hour Photo - did it borrow from another source?

Spoiler:
Will Graham
should have watched the movie One Hour Photo in order to catch
Spoiler:
Dolarhyde, the serial killer.
I thought this movie borrowed much from
Spoiler:
Red Dragon.

I'm surprised that this has never come up before.

I miss Gene Rayburn.

If he shoulda watched One Hour Photo then Red Dragon ripped off OHP. But that is not the case. I found One Hour Photo to be the better movie.

Buttmunker 04-15-03 02:00 PM

So much for spoilers. Anyway, the Thomas Harris novel "Red Dragon" came out in 1981.

The Will Graham reference was a joke, son, laugh it up, I say, laugh it up!

Wait a minute... you mean movies aren't all completely original?!?!? I'll never watch another film again!

waskydiver 04-15-03 03:35 PM

Watch Peeping Tom (1962). You will see more similarities between Peeping Tom and Red Dragon then you will see between Red Dragon and One Hour Photo.

The problem I saw was that One Hour Photo came out just a month or so before Red Dragon, and I think it probably took away the mystery that Will Graham was faced with - the connection between Dolarhyde and the victims. I didn't see the movie Red Dragon, but I read the book, and I don't know how the movie played it out with the audience - did the audience see how Dolarhyde made his connection with his victims, or was that part hidden?

Robin Williams' character did what Dolarhyde did, and the connection was the same. The two films were too close in release time, and I thought that may have spoiled the suspense of Red Dragon for those who hadn't read the book.

One Hour Photo is one of the most derivative films ever. I listed all the connections I spotted in another thread. I'll go look for it..................

OK, I'm back. What gives!? The thread would have been from August 2002, why does stuff get deleted so fast around here?

It was a great post. It should be archived along w/ everything else I post on this board :)

Anyway the film "borrows" from:

Blade Runner
Taxi Driver (heavily)
Peeping Tom (heavily)
Clockwork Orange

...and more.

slop101 04-15-03 05:45 PM

yeah, and Ran borrows from King Lear...

... your point?

Pants 04-15-03 06:01 PM

My point is: You are an....

Of course Ran is adapted from a play by Shakespeare.

If One Hour Photo were directly adapted from Peeping Tom then you might have a point

It doesn't remake Peeping Tom, it just rips it off

One Hour Photo was okay. I just thought it had a little too much of a "made for TV movie" feel to it.....
