McFARLANE'S MONSTERS SERIES 2:
TWISTED LAND OF OZ

Not for children under 17. McFarlane Toys' second Monsters series is based on the L. Frank Baum novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The classic characters in the book receive a bit of a 'twist' in this series, an artistic interpretation of what could have been in an alternate Wizard of Oz universe.

I seriously think someone should remake The Wizard of Oz using this premise! Very cool. I guess these figures come out in August.

The folks at McFarlaine Toys do some beautifully detailed work, but their fantasy figures all look like they just stepped off a heavy metal album cover. So dark and depressing. I'll stick with my female anime figure collection thanks.

The Wizard is about the only one that does anything for me.

Holy christ! That scarecrow is ****ed up!

I don't like the McFarlane twisted stuff. the First series of Clive barkers lost souls (or whatever) were cool and I picked them up, but the second series seemed like they were gross just for the sake of it. They should have had a story like the first series.

Now this one. I saw these a while back and I think they are lame. seems they are trying to push the envelope just for the sake of it with no real point. I like the McGee's Alice figures because it adds a twist to Alice without making it too gross for no reason. Most of all it had a story.

Now whats really the point of making the cowardly lion look like he just got into a fight and ****ed **** up?

then most of all I don't get Dorthy. whats the point? so for the comment of "the way the wizard of Oz SHOULD have been" I say.. Negative. the way it should have been was like the book which it wondered a bit away from to begin with starting with the ruby slippers.


My guess is that this series will not sell all it's units at Kay bee or toys r us and will be in the discount basket faster then anything else. I rank this series up their with "Pirate Spawn".... simply awful and lame.

the scarecrow and lion are pretty cool, but the rest aren't that great.IMO

Sure, I wouldn't mind a severe interpretation of the story - but Dorothy dressed in a corset? Toto as a monster?

I was of course being facetious in saying that. If that's what The Wizard of Oz was really like, I think the movie would have scared the **** out of me even more than it did! :)

Not bad, McFarlene's figures always have so much detail and work put into the sculpts, they never seise to amaze me. I have a 12" McFarlene Edward Scissorhands guarding my DVDs, he's got sensors so that if you get close enough he moves his arms & blades, I love the thing. I have a feeling I'll probably be picking a couple of these Oz figures up to accompany him.

Not true. For a while there they lost their way and were putting out crappy sculpts with bland detail. Only recently have they stepped it up.

As far as these figures are concerned..:yack: The "tinman" looks like a modified Spawn figure..

I love it - I'd love to see a movie like this. :D Perhaps American McGee can make a FPS game for the PC based on this.

American McGee is already doing an OZ related game and currently has toys out for it right now.

Not as twisted and morbid as McFarlanes desperate attempt of attention, but I'm sure it has more substance then these cheap toys which seem to just want to sell the shock factor and carry no real meaning on to why they are the way they are.

Those are hilarious. Not a toy collector, though.

Actually, in either the late 80s or early 90s, there was a comic book called "Oz Squad."

The premise was sort of a goof on the "grim 'n' gritty" comics of the time.

It went something like this:

There were now plane flights between Oz and Earth. Dorothy was a secret agent. The scarecrow was sort of a moody punk obsessed with the occult. The tin man was now an assassin and "transformer" - also think he had an affair with the wicked witch. And the cowardly lion was a fashion model who could sort of morph between a semi-human and lion form.

Yeah - that's why I brought it up - I was just thinking these designs were cooler than what he was working on. :)

Actually the Ruby slippers were an invention of the movie to show off the Technicolor. I believe they were originally silver shoes (been a while since I read it)

They make a horror version of Oz and they don't include the Wicked Witch of the West or the flying monkeys? Lame.

I've read that L. Frank Baum designed "The Wizard of Oz" as political allegory, regarding the Populist Party, who wanted to switch from the gold standard to the silver standard at the time the book was written.

The stuff looks cool, but the lion looks like he would hand you your ass in about 15 pieces...why would he lack courage?

The American McGee's Flying Monkey was disturbing...the same way Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum were.

I admire McFarlane's twisted disposition, but this stuff just seems a tad too juvenile, as many of you pointed out. I do like the look of the Wizard, though, even with the "incorrect" slippers.

The "dark" Wizard of Oz crap is getting pretty old. This is hardly an original idea.

Agreed. I think these figures suck. They should come out with a 'dark' Shrek line. :)
