Stone Reader
 

"Stone Reader" is a film aimed at people who like to read. That might be a fast diminishing group, but hopefully its not diminishing among people who frequent art-house theatres.

For the benefit of those who are not aware, here's the 'plot' - Mark Moskowitz makes political ads but more importantly he's a voracious reader. He remembers trying to read a book, "The Stones of Summer" by Dow Mossman, when he was 18. He can't get in to it. He picks it up again 25 years later and loves it. He then tries to find other works by the author but comes up with nothing. So he starts trying to find out why and it becomes a quest to find the author and his associates.

The film starts off as a documentary but there's enough things going on as the film progresses that make you think of it otherwise. And really after a while its not about trying to find Mossman, and the film is really about good books, those that have changed lives, and discussions about good books.

It might sound boring on paper, but I really liked the film. Maybe only because I've enjoyed some of the books that Moskowitz did (Vonnegut and Heller come to mind) but also because I saw the rest of the film as book recommendations.
