Wow, Bringning Down The House is still going pretty strong!

Goat3001 03-30-03 01:17 PM

I'm really surprised that Bringing Down The House is doing so well.

Also I was thinking a lot more people would see Chicago since the Oscars, I guess not.

The Antipodean 03-30-03 01:42 PM

Huh, yesterday at boxofficemojo.com they were predicting "Bringing Down The House" to squeak out to #1 in the estimates -- that's the first time in a while I've seen them call it wrong with early estimates. Good to see "The Core" bottom out, it didn't do a thing for me. Waste of two hours.

None of the new movies did particularly well, but then again, none of them were particularly well received either. I am astonished at the popularity of Bringing Down The House as well. When it opened, I was thinking that it would make a little under $14 million in the opening week - when it more than doubled that, I was floored, and continue to be with its strong box office.

Geofferson 03-30-03 02:39 PM

Surprised that Basic was able to make $12M despite being trashed in the reviews.

Rypro 525 03-30-03 03:26 PM

Damn, Spirited Away only made 1.5 million.

movieking 03-30-03 03:35 PM

Since this has such a close DVD release date, it really doesn't surprise me that much...

Patman 03-30-03 03:52 PM

Spirited Away only played in roughly 700 threaters this weekend.

And the marketing campaign for the rerelease only hit a few days ago.

Mourn 03-30-03 04:52 PM

Quick, how many movies mocking square white people into the top five at once! I'm sure the studios could cram a few more in, they gotta have some boxed away somewhere.

Hey, does anyone know how much The Pianist made? In an article they said it was up 130 some percent, which is great, the movie is finally get some of its recognition. But anyone know the number?

Wow, not to sound pretentious, but I had no idea how disconnected i had become with mainstream films untill I saw that top ten. I have only seen two of the current top ten, Chicago and Bringin Down the House (which was crap), and I have absolutely no desire what-so-ever to see the other eight.

dknight04 03-31-03 06:46 AM

I had the feeling that The Core would hit the number 1 spot with a big opening. Looks like America is in the mood for humor especially with the war in Iraq.

angryyoungman 03-31-03 10:17 AM

I don't think there will be a wider release of The Pianist, because Universal will make more money when it's released on DVD on 4/15.

The same goes for Disney, who gave Spirited Away a slightly wider release, but won't bother with any more theaters since their DVD release of the film is 4/15 as well.

syphon00 03-31-03 01:36 PM

I have no freakin' clue why everyone is kissing
Chicago's ass
I thought it was just an ok movie?
why do all the cirtics like musicals so much?

C.H.U.D. 03-31-03 01:44 PM

Because everyone in Hollywood likes to come across as artsy and pretentious, so they flock to big musicals. Either that, or Kevin Smith is right and everyone in Hollywood is gay.
