Dreamcatcher
This movie's gotten pretty bad reviews. Just read Ebert's 1 1/2-star review here.
Haven't heard any buzz for this movie here. Does anyone plan on seeing it? I'll probably finish the book tonight and catch a matinee tomorrow, most-likely. |
It’s getting hammered by the critics. But I know I’ll end up seeing it anyway. I’m a sucker for horror movies.
|
I was interested in this one until the bad reviews started coming out. Think I'll pass now.
|
I'll wait until Wednesday. The theatre by me has a $4.50 movie ticket for the first showings on Saturday's and Wednesday's.
|
I am going tonight. Pretty good review in the San Francisco Chronicle but all the reviews that I have read blame bad source material and that King may have been on some weird ass drugs when he was layed up after his accident a few years ago.
|
Is anybody more likely to see this one because of the Animatrix short that's attached?
(For those who don't know, an animated short set in the world of the Matrix called The Final Flight of the Osiris is being shown with this film). |
i'll watch it. not a fan of theaters, but the movie looks cool (advertising is doing its job well), and i love me some jason lee. the animatrix is what drove me over the edge to watch it.

Dude, Ebert gave 'Cop and A Half' a good review.
|
I was so looking forward to seeing this, with the creepy trailer, Morgan Freeman, Jason Lee and Tom Sizemore attached. All I can say is: WTF? Those three guys phoned in their performances and had fairly limited screen time, and I was laughing when I should've been frightened. King was definitely on the drugs when he thought this one up. Phantoms was the bomb, indeed! See that one instead, same movie as this, only better, if you can believe it. Alka Seltzer missed out on some great product placement in this one!!!

Wow... well we all know why they tagged on the Animatrix short on it.. :p

It's a terrible Stephen King book, one of his weakest IMHO, so I'm not surprised the movie's getting panned. Some of the reviews I've read have specifically lambasted the plot, which far as I can tell is pretty faithful to the book. I'll definitely wait for DVD to catch this one, the book left a bad taste in my mouth, he's had much better other books in recent years. (I'm still waiting for a "Talisman" adaptation dammit!)

He addresses a good point Samuel. just because he gave something else that was crappy a good review doesn't mean he is wrong about this one.

the movie is corny.
the first 20 minutes are ok and then it feels like a made for tv movie. |
I didn't read the book and stayed away from reviews because I thought it looked like a good, creepy film. Little did I know
Spoiler:
On a side note, I had no clue that the Animatrix short film was going to be shown before Dreamcatcher. After a few minutes, people were scratching their heads and walking out of the theater, thinking that they were in the wrong room. I have to admit that I thought I might have walked into the wrong theater too. I wasn't aware they were making an animated short. I could tell it was matrix related by the way it opened and kind of thought maybe it was some sort of special advertisement for the Matrix, but after 10 minutes, I was starting to wonder what was up. I'd guess that maybe 20 or 30 people got up and walked out at various points, only to come walking back in a few minutes later. They should probably have some sort of header attatched to the short, so people know they're in the right place. That being said, the opening sequence was pretty slick. Definitely some of the best character CG I've seen. |
I, for one, liked it. It was better than the book, at least. My one complaint is the ending:

Oh yeah... Spoiler:

I'm with Banjo, I think it was a faithful adaption of a good book. Many critics panned it because it was so confusing, and I have to say that if I hadn't read the book, I'd be confused too. But instead, I thought they did a great job, because it was exactly how I pictured the book in my head.
Spoiler:
I coulda' sworn that Pete was played by Bill Paxton's brother! They look and sound nearly identical! As for the ending, Spoiler:

Ok, just finished seeing this "movie". Everyone listen.....you have to run....not walk....away from any place showing this movie. I have one word..."duddits". I've never read the book but I cannot fathom it being any worse than the movie I just saw.
* * * * * * SPOILERS * * * * * (sorry, still don't know how to do that black spoiler hiding) The first 20 minutes of the movie were pretty good. Suspenseful and full of secrets. Seemed like it was actually going to build up to something wonderful. Then it happened. We get a look at an alien (something I wasn't expecting in the first place). It all goes downhill from there. Character development was non-existent, unless you count staring at a picture of your father, saying the same phrase over and over again, snappy one liners that aren't so snappy, and biting on toothpicks character development. Each character in this movie had a certain tick that would just be used to death (no pun intended). And let me ask this question....why in the world does the "alien" have an English accent? And this so called "memory warehouse", where is it located and how do I get one? Guess I'll have to dial 1-800-HENRY to find out. The movie was so scatter-brained. It tried to be too many things....a war movie, a horror movie, a supernatural thriller, a comedy, a sci-fi movie. I'm still not sure why Duddits didn't just show up to fight Mr. Grey in a Mortal Kombat like atmosphere instead going through all the trouble of recruiting 4 kids, giving them secret powers, and waiting 20 years until they're grown up to do absolutely nothing but die and escort Duddits to the finale (which reminded me of Men in Black). And what is the deal with Scooby-Doo and SSDD (Same Sh*t, Diff. Day)? I thought the movie was going to parallel Scooby-Doo to the German Shephard giving birth to the worm at the end. Or at least have Jonesy take off his mask and say, "It all would have worked if it weren't for those meddling kids and that dog". Someone please tell me that the book isn't like this movie. I truly expected more from all this talent. And I still can't figure out why this movie was called Dreamcatcher. |
I thought it was pretty good. I liked the 4 main characters(the friends), especially Jason Lee.
You gotta love the rectal aliens!! |
Okay, this was the worst movie I've seen in theaters in about two years.
I'd tear apart the plot, but I'm still too insane with anger. ...and seriously, The Animatrix short wasn't even that cool. |
How did the audience react to it?
