Head of State- Thoughts?
 

I think this film looks awful. Really awful. The tv spots have almost no laughs , IMO. What do you guys think?

my thoughts exactly. i think chris rock is one of the funniest people out there, but it seems like he sold out for this one. looks like another "afro-centric" movie being fed to the caucasian population under the premise that it is cool.

I liked the idea better when it was called Ali G: InDaHouse.

Then again, they're both ripoffs of The Candidate and Mr. Smith Goes To Washington.

I like Chris Rock. His "Bring the Pain" concert was genius. I laughed my ass off so much, it made me cry.

The trailer for this movie -- especially the part where the crusty 'ol white folks sing along & dance with Nelly -- makes me cringe. No. It makes my skin crawl. I HATE it.

If Chris was smart, he'd cut this movie sh*t out..start up the Chris Rock Show again & just release concert films..

Exactly! It's as if they they're saying:

"Hey white people! Look! He's become President. BUT HE'S BLACK! Get it? Black people have never been president! That's funny! He's gonna get in the white house and act all black! Laugh, white people, laugh! "

Bernie Mac and Chris Rock are two of the absolutely funniest guys on the circuit. Looks funny to me. Besides the old fold in the commercial look like they could use a little "jigginess"!

I think the idea is that the fewer Thoughts you have the more you'll like Head of State :)

OK, another movie where white people are uncool and dont get it, Chris Rock should have learned after that other horrible movie he was involved with, the Beatty remake, that people dont want to see him do PG-13 schtick. Also, he just doesnt seem to have a leading man quality as is evident from box office receipts from all his movies.

I love Chris Rock and Bernie Mac and I thought the film was an average comedy where something felt a little off.

It's too bad because this should've been a good one.

It's worth a rental but only go if you love Rock or Mac.

Rock is funny and Mac is especially funny when he comes in halfway through but that's about it.

No decent supporting players and not enough laughs overall.

That was probably a kind capsule review.

If you're familiar with the comedy of Chris Rock, there's a lot of material you'll probably be also familiar with, most of having to do with the incongruent injustices of living in the U.S. of A. But if you treat it like a 90 minute comedy sketch of a black man running for President, it works pretty well, and there are plenty of laughs mixed in to carry the film to the finish line.

So, again, check your brain at the door, and have a good time as the presidential campaign unfolds.

I give it 2.5 stars or a grade of C+.

Considering Chris Rock has never starred in a good film, I'll pass on seeing this one.

I saw it. Not much to say. it's basically Distinguished Gentleman with a different cast.

By far, the funniest scenes are with Bernie Mac and Tracy Morgan. Otherwise, its not too good. It also gives many political schpiels. Dont waste your money. Fortunately, i didnt pay.

I saw it as well. It was passable. Chris Rock and Bernie Mac are great comedians, but they really needed a better script than this.

I was really disappointed. Mac steals the show, but Rock just kind of slumps along... there were only a FEW good laughs throughout... and for a 95minute movie to only have an amount of laughs that I can count on one or two hands, is not good.. I'd certainly wait for video...

I saw it, and maybe b/c I had high hopes (Rock and Mac together and all) I thought it was a tremendous letdown. I wasnt expecting anything more than alot of jokes and some funny scences, but Chris Rock wasnt funny at ALL in this movie, the running gag of Robin Givens getting taken out by security throughout the movie was passable, at best. I guess Rock was trying to be somewhat serious in the movie, but even when he went for jokes, i just didnt think they were very funny. Bernie Mac saved this movie though, b/c if he didnt show up (thankfully) halfway through the movie, i was surely gonna walk out. Bernie wasnt at his greatest, but he was still damn funny for the amount of screen time he got in the movie. as someone else said, if you love Rock and Mac, rent it, if not, dont even rent.

Add a pinch of Chris Rock's comedy, and fill the rest with water- that's how this movie was. The premise was pretty generic to begin with, but then the execution of it wasn't good at all. There were a few funny parts, but overall it was pretty ho-hum. When are people going to learn that old white yuppies dancing to hip-hop may have been funny in 1992, but now it just feels oh so lame...

For those who saw this who are into angry black stand-up comedians, I would recommend you go see Dysfunktional Family with Eddie Griffin (I wrote a review thread of it elsewhere). His comedy is a bit different than Chris Rock's (he's definitely a lot more crude, for better or worse), but he has this elastic energy that really brings you into his performance. Seeing it in the theater was just one of the most fun movie outings I've had in a long time - which is a lot more than I can say for Head of State. Anyway, check it out.
