Stan Brakhage (1933-2003)

This hasn't been widely reported, but it appears that filmmaker Stan Brakhage died two days ago:

For those unfamiliar with his work, here is a good bio:

Also, Criterion is releasing By Brakhage, a compilation of 26 of his works in a few weeks:

How extremely coincidential and unfortunate. I only just now started to get familiar with his work with Criterion's announcement of their DVD....

Yeah really. This sucks. Criterion finnally creates a wide outlet for his work to be seen and he doesn't live to see it. Very sad. I didn't know he was so old. I mean 70 isn't exactly old, but I thought the guy was in his 30's or 40's

I only knew of Brakhage through others' writings and references. Sadly, I missed an exhibition last year of a number of his works. So, I'm looking forward to the upcoming anthology, albeit with a bittersweet tinge.

Criterion just added a brief tribute to their front page.

I look forward to the chance to see some of this legendary filmmaker's work. Far too few take the chances he did with this medium.
