which movies were shot back to back ???
I was always curious about that concept ... and very surprised when I learned that BTTF 2&3 and Superman 1&2 were shot that way ..
I think everybody knows that the 3 LOTRs are / were done back to back and Matrix 2&3 ...
now I wonder .. what other movies ?? maybe something from the planet of the apes series ??
and why would George Lucas not consider to do star wars 7-9 that way .. 3 years .. 3 movies .. lots of dinero ..
but hopefully this is not tunring into another George bashing thread
cheers

Superman and Superman 2 were filmed back-to-back although little footage was used in the actual release of Superman 2.

and well .. lucas also initially talked about 7-9 .. and then .. sometimes he let slip a comment .. and the mainly saying "it will take another 10 years" .. but hey .. we know he is all about money ... so .. instead of announcing NOW that he will do 7-9 .. he may just wait .. create momentum ... and then do 7-9 in 3 years .. reaking in lots of dinero .. i think it will happen .. i just do not think that I will get that excited about it ...
I also think they will go on with the matrix universe .. maybe all new characters and some cameos

this is all covered on the superman dvd: superman and superman ii were to be filmed at the same time, and they were, until monetary constraints and deadlines forced them to drop production on ii. when they went back to production on ii, the producers dropped richard donner and went with richard lester to finish the film.
richard lester, if you do not know, was responsible for the three musketeers and the four musketeers, another duo filmed at the same time. however, the second film was culled entirely from "extra" footage shot for the first.

By the way, did you know that the Matrix 2 & 3 were filmed back to back too?

Not really back to back, but during filming of Tod Browning's 1931 version of Dracula, a Spanish language version was filmed at the same time using the same sets. The English version shot during the day and the Spanish version at night. The Spanish version is available as a bonus feature on the Universal DVD.

Not exactly what you're looking for but Oklahoma! was filmed twice at the same time. Each scene was filmed once for the Todd-AO (70mm) and then once again for Cinemascope (35mm). So the two versions consist of entirely different takes for every scene. The Todd-AO version is generally considered superior and it was unavailable for home theater until it was released on laserdisc in 1994.

I like that the back-to-back filming idea is being used on the Matrix sequels and the LOTR series. I wish that this sort of planning would happen more often, because it should mean that most of the cast will probably carry over and that there will be some degree of continuity between the films. Of course it doesn't guarantee that both sequels will be any good, but I think it's better to start out with the same key players than to have a sequel (or series of sequels) with new directors, new stars, and new writers each time out.
My question isn't about past films, I'm wondering about other upcoming projects that are being filmed or planning to be filmed back to back.

Back to back filming isn't always an option for the simple reason such as:
Budget, It's a bigger investment for the studio to shoot back to back considering... what if the first fails. So you typically see these things happen with sequels.

Ring and Rasen were filmed simultaneously by different directors and were released as a double feature - they didn't really work together very well as they both strayed from the original book in different ways. Ring was much more well received than Rasen was. The director of Ring later went back and made Ring 2.
Nightmare on Elm Street 3 was in the can before NOES 2 was completed... when they were released, they decided part 3 was a stronger film and wanted it to be released at a time of year when theater attendance was higher, so they put out 2 first and then a few months later they put out 3. I'm pretty sure that's how it went down, but I could be wrong.

Obscure additions to thread:
Dracula (1931)and a Spanish language version of Dracula used the same sets at night.
The "Daimajin" series 1966... A TRI-FECTA ...all 3 movies filmed at the same time but released a year apart.

The Hammer studios would do that all the time. They would film two films back to back with many of the same actors and sets. Examples being Plague of Zombies/Reptile and Dracula Prince of Darkness/Rasputin the Mad Monk. THen they would mix them up for the double features. They would show Plague of ZOmbies and Rasputin as a double bill, and same with Dracula and Reptile. If i'm not mistaken that's how they released so many films in the early to mid 60s.
