James Cameron's "Ghosts of the Abyss"

Well, we've all been wondering what JC's been upto. Looks like it's a 3-D film that takes you inside the wreck of Titanic. With Bill Paxton of course. ;)

Looked interesting enough. Comes out April 11th

Can't Cameron get off of his Titanic/underwater kick?

He made the most successful movie of all time.....I know he doesn't need the money, so he's just doing what floats his boat. More people should do that, than going for the project that has the most zero's attached to it.

Besides, you ever hear anyone say, Damn, Tom Hanks should get off the World War II kick, or the Space Program kick.

Drexl 03-06-03 09:35 PM

Couldn't he have come up with a title that didn't make me think it was about another one of his films before I read what it was about?

Alright, now that's a valid point.

No pun intended.

This 'movie' doesn't look like a movie at all to me. I don't know what it is, but I know I won't bother watching it.

CuriousGeorge 03-07-03 03:33 PM

When I first heard "James Cameron" and the title "Ghosts of the Abyss," I jumped thinking it was some sort of prequel or sequel to the Abyss, and then I went back into my cave and sulked.

...because I would SO watch another "Abyss" movie.

And here I was hoping it would be a sequel to John Carpenter's "Ghosts of Mars", but set deep in the ocean...

<Bump>

Just wanted to get some more info on this.

The TV Trailer says there are "Advanced Tickets on Sale"

-What for? - Other than marketing.

Is this an IMAX movie, or will it only be shown at special places etc..

Has anyone read any reviews or have any other info.

I like 3D movies.. and loved IMAX's recent 3D movie with the Simpsons and other Cartoon clips.

Thanks :)

I like Cameron, but I too wish he would do something other than Titanic. This seems like a retread of what we saw in Titanic, sans the love story. He is an immensely talented director, and I wish he would do something new--it's been more than 5 years already. I will see Ghost because he directed it, but not with much anticipation.

elias 04-09-03 08:55 AM

As PalmerJoss said, the seems like a retread. I expect the scenes with the "ghosts" should be the same as we saw in his original Titanic movie, i.e. encountering locked gates, running on the decks, preparing the life boats, etc. Why see that again here. I'm not sure what he's going for and unfortunately I'm not intrigued enough to go see it.

Your post confuses the hell out of me. You do realize it is a documentary about the wreck, right? It was shot using submarines on the actual wreck.

I saw the trailer at the movie theater and it sure didn't look like a documentary to me. It looks like a scripted movie wrapped around a "documentary".

PalmerJoss 04-09-03 11:02 AM

The movie was shot as a kind of semi-documentary, I believe. Cameron went down to the actual wreck(with Bill Paxton, who's obviously not acting or reading script), and he shot footage of the wreck, then he filmed actors(as the passengers of the Titanic) and is superimposing them over the footage of the wreck(this will be the 3-D portions, I believe). So, all he is really doing is making the same movie--the only difference is he filmed the actors on a soundstage instead of a replica Titanic set this time around. What's next? A documentary about machines and technology with 3-D terminators superimposed over the images(in 3-D of course)?

Steve Phillips 04-09-03 11:59 AM

The entire film was shot using Cameron's new 3-D camera. It is being shown in IMAX 3-D at equipped theatres; and well as another 100 or so regular theatres in polarized (grey lenses) 3-D using his new digital projection system. These 100 theatres had to be specially certified to do this. Mostly Regal Cinemas, as they have invested in the technology. Here in las Vegas, we are getting two regular theatres running it in 3-D as well as another IMAX 3-D showing.

These cameras were also used to shoot 3-D sequences for this summer's SPY KIDS 3-D: GAME OVER. However, for general release, they are going the red/cyan anaglyph route. Hopefully, the theatres that are already certified for the superior digital polarized projection will be offered a version in that format.

Cameron is hell bent on making 3-D projection simple and cost effective; he may just have succeeded from all reports. He stated he wants to shoot a 3-D feature with stars soon. The release pattern would be 3-D in specially certified theatres, followed by a flat 2-D release for general run.

I don't expect everything to go 3-D all of a sudden, but this will allow an occasional 3-D feature to be released easily without the technical hassles or cost problems of the past.

Capo2002 04-09-03 12:49 PM

This just looks like an extention of the beginning of Titanic. James Cameron needs to get off the Titanic theme it's getting a little old.

Steve Phillips - Our resident 3-D expert. I love you man.

Steve Phillips 04-11-03 10:50 AM

I wish this 3-D expert was more impressed by what I saw last night!

I went to a screening in one of Las Vegas "certified" theatres.

I had been led to believe it would be a digitally projected polarized presentation, but in fact it was a 35mm film print with the images stacked in over/under format just like the 3-D movies of the 80s.

I'm sorry to say the presentation was HORRIBLE. The images weren't even lined up on the screen straight! The image on the screen was murky, unclear, and dark.

Seriously, AMITYVILLE 3-D back in the 80s in shopping mall cinemas looked far better than the garbage they projected last night. I've seen lots and lots of these films, and this one one of the worst presentations I've encountered.

Looking beyond the poor projection, I was surprised at the number of shots in the film that were shot incorrectly from a stereoscopic standpoint so that they were uncomfortable to view. Looks like Mr. Cameron still has a few things to learn about 3-D cinematography. The actual underwater footage in and around the wreck was actually the best part; the problems were mostly stuff shot aboard the ship.

I'm a huge fan of 3-D movies. Properly shot and projected, they can be very impressive, clear, and easy to view. However, the only conclusion is that if this is the best they can come up with, I'd rather they not bother.

I think Cameron's cameras are excellent, and that will be used for great things in the near future. They just need to rethink the idea of projecting these movies in the outdated over/under format. It will do more harm than good. Better to stick with IMAX 3-D for now, and go to wider distribution when they can do it properly.

I must stress I am only commenting on the 35mm over/under film presentation I saw. I haven't seen the IMAX 3-D version yet, and at least that will likely be clearer and brighter. Even so, I'd recommend seeing SPACE STATION in IMAX 3-D anytime over GHOSTS. It was far more impressive.

This is not the film that is going to revive the 3-D feature. Too bad.....

Pants 04-11-03 10:53 AM

I hope the IMAX will be better. How much of the film is in 3-D? The whole thing, or just parts?

Steve Phillips 04-11-03 10:54 AM

The whole film is 3-D, except there are some flat images superimposed at times.

Matt925 04-13-03 12:07 AM

I thought it was pretty good. Not nearly as incredible as Space Station, but still worth watching.

Steve Phillips 04-13-03 02:08 PM

Matt 925, did you see the IMAX 3-D version or the 35mm 3-D version? I'm curious if some theaters running the 35mm version are getting better results than the garbage I sat through.

I saw the IMAX version. When I called it pretty good, I was referring to the movie and experience, not the quality of the 3D picture. But it looked good. The only thing I have to compare it to is Space Station and I would say they are about the same in that regard, but floating around in space is so much more interesting and makes for a much better experience than looking at a barnacle covered hull.

I will say the reenactments were good. They just did it so you know what you were looking at and for some good background information. I can't imagine this being any other way. If they were just showing footage of the wreck, this couldn't be more than 15 minutes long. Again, you can only look at a barnacle covered hull for so long before you start to lose interest.

If you are just looking for a 3D experience, try to see Space Station (not even sure if it's still playing anywhere). That is incredible. This makes for a decent substitute. But if you have any interest in the Titanic, I'm sure you'll get a big kick out of it.
