most underrated actresses

i was pondering a recent thread about john c. reilly and i was thinking what actress could be considered his closest counterpart. or just who are some underrated actresses. IMO stockard channing and toni colette fall into this group. thoughts?

I like Jennifer Tilly and Parker Posey a lot. They do a lot of quirky films and never fail to entertain no matter how bad the films are they're starring in.

Not really sure about underrated, but I think Joan Cussack (sp?) always does a great job.

Hope Davis always does solid work, but she is far from a household name.

Rachel Griffiths is an amazing actress, although she has gotten much of the acclaim she deserves.

I hardly hear anyone even mention Catherine Keener, and she's one of my favorite current actresses.

I agree with this one. Joan Cusack is excellent in everything I can think of off the top of my head. She was hysterical in In & Out and really made the movie for me.

Honk!

Jennifer Jason Leigh. Probably the best actress of her generation. Known, but not well known.

Diane Lane is finally getting the recognition she deserves. She's been underrated for several years though, IMO.

How about Jennifer Connelly? Yeah, it might be a stretch saying that she is underated (especially after the praise she recieved for "A Beautiful Mind") but if you asked the average movie-goer who she is, I'd be willing to bet that most wouldn't know who you were talking about.

Jennifer Jason Leigh
Claudia Black
Geena Davis (why is she doing Stuart Little Movies?)
and for comedy:
Two SCTV alumni, Catherine OHara and Andrea Martin.

I agree with Stockard Channing and Laura Linney too.

emma thompson is a good pick, although i dont really consider her underrated but rather not concerned with churning out films right and left.

i can't believe i didnt think about parker posey! she is definitely john c. reilly's counterpart!

oh, what about bebe newwirth (sp?)??? it seems she pulls off really solid performances whenever she's in a movie, however, it also seems that hollywood dismisses her as the broadway and fraiser lady
