I thought it was a pretty horrible movie, which was unfortunate, because the first third of it was really quite good.

I mean, the concept of a freelance transporter/getaway driver is pretty darn interesting, and there's definitely a good movie to be made out of that. But this wasn't it...

The music? :yack:

Also, I wrote the following on my website about the movie last week:
"Okay, now, what I want to talk about next might sound like some kind overly-educated, university-student, lame social-criticism. Let me say, however, that this is the first time that something like this has ever really bothered me in a movie. The problem? This is one hell of a sexist movie. First of all, there's only one woman in the entire movie (the annoying Asian girl). Second, she's an annoying Asian girl. Third, she is the most stereotypically weak and "I'm-only-in-this-movie-to-look-good-and-be-rescued-by-the-hero" character I've ever seen. Seriously, she does nothing in this movie that involves any kind of strength, and halfway through she offers herself up sexually to Frank for saving her in an earlier action sequence. Sheesh, haven't we progressed passed this kind of thing in the last thirty or fourty years?"

I was pretty underwhelmed as well. I came in expecting a no-brainer action movie, and even that didn't happen. A few of the action sequences were enjoyable, but the rest was pretty ho hum to me. I love a hot babe anytime, but she was pretty worthless.

it's not my favorite but i do like actions movies, providing they have content and aren't just a excuse for improbable, impossible, just cause looks cool stuff.

i was actually gonna turn it off when the girl started disrobing. of course after the scene... but then there was nothing.

the begining and concept of the transporter was decent as Geoff H stated. this movie should of been like phone booth, and set in the car, around the car etc.

was she not completely responsible for
Spoiler:
rescuing all the people from the container? Without her persistence and courage, no one would have stopped them. The Transporter surely wouldn't have cared if it weren't for her and the way she was willing to risk her life for them. And shooting her own father at the end?

She was probably the strongest character in the movie.

If you like Shu Qi, see So Close, the new Corey Yuen flick which will be released later this year by Columbia - Its basically Charlie's Angels, but better.

braveheart32 04-28-03 07:54 AM

I just rented theis movie last week. It sucked....but it had it moments. It was predictable, the music was horrid, and the acting was just about painful (Stratham was decent).

With that said, the action was the fun part. I loved the bus fight scene, and the car chase was nice, although there were some obvious jump cuts.

If I had to rate it...I'd give it 2 stars.

Hey, for Shu Qi, this role is a step up from her earlier HK soft-core porn work. Better stay away from Sex and Zen II. ;)

I like the film for what it is: not much more than a shell of a story, with great car chases, and great fight scenes (courtesy of director/fight chorographer Corey Yuen). Plus I've been a fan of Jason Statham since Snatch and an admirer of Shu Qi since, er, Sex and Zen 2.

On the other hand, I agree, the music did suck.
And I had a hell of a time understanding some of the inspector's dialogue through his French accent.

MrX 04-28-03 09:37 PM

I enjoyed it. The fight scenes were good and so was the car chase. One of the better action movies I've seen in a while.

I havn't seen the movie yet, but did see a preview last year for it. I cracked up when they showed the serving tray rocket block. But for some reason I was the only one in the theater laughing. I don't understand why.

Deftones 04-28-03 11:51 PM

I rented this last week. It looked cool from the trailers and I like Jason Stratham. It was ok. Nothing to write home about.

thejammy 04-29-03 02:53 PM

well i got it as a blind buy and reco from ylmonster. I watched about half of the movie, it was good until the girl showed up. I kept thinking okay maybe she will get knocked unconsciene. Nope she kept on talking and talking. I could barely understand her.

It seemed like brainless inconsistent violence.

Spoiler:
the first car chase was good, funny even. I just expected more from Jason Stratham and Luc Besson

B.A. 06-01-03 10:50 PM

Okay, I just watched it. It's a decent action flick that would have been better if not for the terrible soundtrack; the incessant high-pitched shrieks of the female character; and I noticed the added effects to the gunfire, too - completely unnecessary. The supporting actors were cheesy, but that was completely expected going in, so I can't find too much fault in that. You get what you pay for.

Other than that - Jason Statham was a bad-ass. Very good job on his part. The chase scenes were pretty well done and the fight scenes weren't too bad either, but the oil-based scene was a little unnecessary.

This was probably one of the stupid most unbelievable things I have ever seen in a movie. I mean the movie is supposed to be in a "real world." I can't even suspend disbelief on that one.

DVDho78DTS 06-02-03 09:11 AM

I watched this movie yesterday and was entertained. The movie is a little out there in realism but enjoyable to watch once. Nothing I care to watch again.

ipkevin 06-02-03 09:36 AM

Have you guys watched the extended action scenes on the DVD? Man, if you do an A-B comparison to the cut that made the film, you REALLY get a feel for what they mean by HK fight scenes are designed with a "rhythm". They're much better. And the smaller twin from Kiss of the Dragon is in the movie!

Also, I must say that I enjoyed most of the music. I hated the Missy Elliot track, but everything else was pretty cool and weird. Even the other hip hop tracks weren't the usual thing and had a different sound. Ditto the techno bits. Throw in the symphonic and middle eastern sounds and you have a pretty entertaining soundtrack.

SunMonkey 06-02-03 10:22 AM

I wish I hadn't rented this one. And because of the 3 1/2 star review, I now know which DVDTalk reviewer to ignore from now on. ;)

Fok 06-02-03 10:56 PM

Nope, thought it had no substance at all.

Applejack 06-18-03 10:48 PM

Did anyone else hate "The Transporter" as badly as I

I can not begin to describe how badly I hated this show.

I was expecting a solid, fun action movie with english guys like lock stock and 2 smoking barrels or something, instead I got a horrible movie which should have been straight to video.

I especially hated:

1) The girl. Man was she annoying. She wasn't particularly hot, and she was a horrible actress.

2) The inconsistencies-
Spoiler:
at the end, why doesn't he beat the crap out of the old chinese guy? After all, he had beaten 10 guys at a time, and now it is only them two. Why does he bother with pulling the rock off of the cliff during the fight, yet he doesn't use it? Also, and finally, if the chinese girl could beat up the 3 armed men in the car and escape, why wouldn't she help him earlier in the movie?

3) The parts which served no purpose than to get women to watch the movie- the fight in the oil. The way he took off his shirt all of the time for no reason.

Some of the stuff was either stuff I had seen in countless other action movies, which could be seen a mile away
Spoiler:
the part at the end when the chinese guy was getting ready to kill him, and you heard the gunshot which actually came from the girl offscreen
All it was missing was his friend at the police station ( which after all of the illegal stuff he did, it was pretty far fetched that the cops would like him) turning on him. This wouldn't have bothered me so much if the action scenes would have been cooler.

did anyone like this?

Usually I don't post threads like this, but I thought it would be a fun action movie, instead it was a huge, huge disappointment.

ArchibaldTuttle 06-18-03 11:00 PM

I liked it, I thought the fight scenes were really well done, If you can accept that it's brainless fun, than you can let all that other stuff go

one thing I thought was kinda dumb
Spoiler:
the action sequence involving the trucks, where he is underneath the truck (if I remember correctly) and he throws a wrench or something with his free hand through a window to kill a guy, no friggen way, how can anyone be that strong

this is like one of those movies you watch once if you can catch it on tv, not bad, not good, but who cares it's Jason Statham I love this guy

SunMonkey 06-18-03 11:07 PM

Yeah, I pretty much thought it sucked badly. In fact, I haven't disliked a movie as much as I disliked this one in quite some time.

cultshock 06-19-03 12:34 AM

The movie is a guilty pleasure of mine. I like Jason Statham and I think Shu Qi is hot, and as long as you check your brain at the door, the film is good mindless fun.

But, saying that, I admit that director Corey Yuen has done far better (ie. Fist of Legend and Fong Sai Yuk- great films, but avoid the Miramax dubbed DVDs).

Fok 06-19-03 01:46 AM

Yep this movie sucked big time. Everything was bad about this movie, I think the character/actor was trying to hard to be tough.

chase3001 06-19-03 07:31 AM

No, I really enjoyed it. I don't want action movies to make sense . I just look for cool cars, cool fights and hot women, and if I do not see any of that then I get pissed off.

Caoimhin 06-19-03 07:35 AM

I thought it was pretty heinous as well. I thought the script was poor with no character development, even by action-movie standards and the acting was horrible, with the exception of Jason Statham. Shu Qi, while attractive, has absolutely no presence or thought behind her words and the actor playing her father was in the top 10 worst actors I've ever seen...and am I the only one who thought he looked like an Asian David Gest?

matome 06-19-03 08:03 AM

Crap. Statham was kinda cool, but across the rest of the board the acting was horrid, the story and action were weak and the characters were cardboard cutouts.
