CULVER CITY, CA, February 19, 2003 - Alfred Molina (Frida, Identity) will join Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco in Columbia Pictures' highly anticipated sequel to Spider-Man, it was announced today by Amy Pascal, Chairman of Columbia Pictures.

Molina will portray Spider-Man's new archenemy "Doc Ock" in the second installment to Columbia Pictures' 2002 worldwide phenomenon Spider-Man, which grossed more than $820 million worldwide and became the fifth highest grossing movie in U.S. history. Spider-Man is based on the classic Marvel Comic book series.</b></i>

<b><i>Kroeger Asked to Write Spider-Man II Theme

Chad Kroeger, who's Spider-Man song "Hero" is nominated three times for tonight's Grammy Awards on CBS (8PM ET/PT), told KITV that he's been asked to return for the sequel...

Although the film doesn't hit theaters until May 2004, the singer-songwriter-musician has already started to bat around ideas. He admits that he'd glad to have some time to pound it out.

"The first one was easy to write, it's this second one's that's going to be tough," Kroeger said. " So now what am I doing? I'm sitting in bed last night and I'm like trying to think of like a direction or the course or what I'm going to call the song. I can't use the word 'hero,' and I can't use anything to do with 'save us' or 'save' anybody. That's the worst. I literally hit all the good topics with 'Hero,' and I'm now I'm screwed."

He knows he'll get it eventually, so now he's just going to have fun with the idea of being unoriginal.

"What am I going to do? I'm sitting there just like okay maybe I should just call it "Hero II," Kroeger added with a laugh.

<b><i>Spider-Man II Title Update & Casting Info

As you may know, the Spider-Man sequel is currently untitled but the folks at Filmjerk have an update on what the film is now being referred to and what may happen to the title...

According to official casting documents being shared with New York casting agents (which FilmJerk.com was able to obtain), the current name of the production is "Spider-Man II." The Roman numeral-focused title currently displaces the "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "Spider-Man 2" titles that were previously rumored...

In speaking with several entertainment-focused branding experts tonight, they feel the title needs to be slightly tweaked with a possible sub-title, possibly tying into the villain this go-around, Dr. Octopus.

They've also got casting news on four new supporting roles needed for the film. Hit the link above for those characters' descriptions.

An Amazing Spider-Man 2 Set Report!

'AgentQ7' send us this excellent report of his experience on the Spider-Man 2 set back in November, 2002 in Chicago. You can check out the pictures that go along with his report here!

I know it's a little late for this update to be breaking news, but this is a follow-up to a report I sent you about the Spider-Man 2 November shoot in Chicago.

To recap, I had reported to you just after I (and 2 friends) went to apply to be extras for the scenes they were shooting here downtown. They had given us a rough idea of where and when they'd be shooting, what we would need to wear, and said they'd call us.

So here's what happened: They said they'd be shooting from approx. November 9th through the 17th, and that they would call. Well, the first WEEK went by, and they DIDN'T. I was bummed. I am a pretty big Spider-Man fan (I even attended the prestigious Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art for my love of comics and desire to illustrate them), and LOVED the first film, and even though I originally assumed that Sam wouldn't be at this very early shoot (it seemed so preliminary; no script and so early that I figured it might be for another early teaser. If anything, I expected just a second unit director or something) after reading reports on your page that he WAS in fact there, and was being as cool with the fans as he is always reported as being, I was REALLY bummed. In fact, the afternoon I read that he WAS there (Nov. 16th), I was whining to all my friends after dinner about how the casting agency hadn't called. Well, at about 7 PM that night, I got the call. I was ecstatic, to say the least. They said they needed us the next morning at 7, and possibly for the following two days as well. Sweet! So we went.

The first day we were put in a group on the "El" train that was done up to look like a New York MTA train (as were the platforms and street signs below -see photos). The setup was that there were two cranes set up between these two adjacent stops along the El track (the "Madison" and "Adams" stops on Wabash Ave.) (on a section of the El tracks called "the loop" downtown, which is exactly what it sounds like, a section of track in a loop, branched off from the main linear tracks (see picture)) with cables strung between them from which hung....the Spider-Cam! (actually what the crew told us it was called, more photos) The train would go around the loop at about half speed, pause before we got to the section where the camera was, and on the take, run by at regular speed. The camera would follow the train from above, dip down, the lens rotating towards us, looking as if it was peering in the windows at us as it zipped by, and then would ascend back up as we pulled away....the amazing Spider-Cam, indeed! We were instructed to react, in half-speed, as if we felt/heard something happening on top of the train, and, of course, not to look directly into the camera. It would take about 10-15 minutes to go around the loop each time, and then we'd shoot for all of 10 seconds as we sped by, and this went on for about 7 HOURS! It was fun, though, with my friends there, and just knowing that I was getting to be a part of Spider-Man 2 (and it didn't hurt that they were paying us $100 a day)!!

The second day was even better, though, because that was the day that I got to meet the man himself, Sam Raimi! That day I got the chance to be in a different spot, outside of the train on the platform. It was horribly, ridiculously freezing cold, but worth it for what I got to do and for the opportunity to be in another, different shot (better chance of actually being in the film, yeah!) That day, we were only being shot by the same camera, but as bystanders behind the train as it went by (on previous days and the next day there were other cameras used for shots both inside and outside the train of close-up reactions). In the middle of the day, on a bathroom break, I wandered down to street level to see what I could see in and around the trailers and tents they had set up for the crew and remote camera equiptment, etc. And there, in a small tent, right on the sidewalk, was Sam, and (I think) John Dykstra, with some others huddled around a tiny monitor. YES! He was here! I didn't approach him then, but later on at lunch I made my move.

I know I'm terribly long-worded, but this is the coolest part of the story, and shows just how awesome Mr. Raimi can be, so bear with me...For lunch, we were led to a building just down the street from the shoot. It had been rented out for our lunch area, and it was an old restaurant that had gone out of business. The "cast" (us extras and the crew had seperate areas, us upstairs and them downstairs, and as I was climbing the stairs in line to get my grub, I saw Sam come in below. Giddy and nervous throughout, at the end of the meal, seeing that there was only one other person left at the table with him, I finally went down the stairs with my camera bag (including my Spider-Man DVD inside) slung over my shoulder, and approached Sam. "Hi. Do you mind if I sit down and say 'hello' for a minute?" "Sure," he said, shaking my outstetched hand. "My name's Ethan." "Ethan what?" That was really polite right away..."Oh, Ethan Harper." "Are you an extra today?" "Yeah." "How's it going out there?" he asked. "Great! A little bit cold, but we're having fun." He asked if I'd ever done this before, and I said I hadn't, but that I always wanted to, and that I was more of an artist by trade than actor. He asked if I had gone to school, and I told him about my going to the Kubert School, asked if he knew Kubert's work, and he said he did but wasn't aware that he had a school. He asked a few more questions about the school, who taught animation, etc. He seemed to be putting so much thought and effort into asking me questions, it was great. He would frequently pause and awkwardly ask another question, his mannerisms like a nervous fan, just like I felt I was acting towards HIM. I think he ended up asking me more questions than I did him! The best part was right near the end of our short conversation...he had stopped talking and was looking down at the ground between his feet, and I wasn't sure if he was thinking of another question to ask (as I said, he seemed like he was really trying to just be polite and be engaging with his questions, which was nice) or if he was now giving me an "okay, we're done now" hint. I kind of looked around for a second, and then let out a "So,...yeah..." and a second later, he turned up towards me with the same humble look as before, and asked "So what character are you playing?" I was like, (and think I said) "Huh?" "What character are you playing?" he asked again, "When you're up there, who are you playing? What's your character?" I said "Oh!, um, I guess I'm just a bystander..." "Just a bystander?!" he asked almost disappointedly, "No, no, you've got to BE somebody. Who are you playing? What's your character?" "Oh!" I said again, stupidly, but then came up with this half-decent zinger: "Well, I guess I'm just, uh, ME! Because honestly, if I were standing on an El platform and saw Spider-Man fighting Doc Ock on top of a train, I'd be pretty excited too!" "Ha, ha, yeah, I guess so!" he said. "Of course, you DO get to see it everyday, don't you?" I asked. "Yeah, yeah, I do," he said with a smile, "it's a great job, and sometimes I have to pinch myself." Awesome.

Somewhere in the conversation I thanked him for doing the sequel, and, adding that I'm sure he heard it all the time, that the first one was great. He said "You're welcome" like he knew I really meant it (which I really did...I love it when the director sticks with a franchise, especially such a great director with such great characters/actors). At the end, he turned to his other side to answer a question from one of the crew members, an aspiring filmmaker himself, who was wondering about Sam's method of storyboard to film, when tragedy struck. I was planning on patiently waiting for him to be through with the other guy, and then continue my conversation, and possibly get a picture and/or signature on my DVD. But as I waited, one of the extras coordinators approached me and said "When you're through, come see me. You're not supposed to do that" and then walked away. D'oh! Well, she was apparently going to let me finish my conversation with him first, though, so even if I were kicked out after that point, I didn't care -I got to talk with THE MAN! Unfortunately, a second later, another, higher-up extras coordinator approached and said "You need to go upstairs NOW." D'oh! again. So I stuck out my hand again to Sam and said "Thanks for talking with me, Sam, gotta go." He turned around and shook my hand and said "You're welcome" or "No problem" or something else congenial, and I went back upstairs, the joy that I had from the oppourtunity to do what I did overshadowing any disappointment that I had of not getting a picture with him.

So we finished the day, and then went again the next day, where I was back inside the train going around in circles for another 7 hours or so...it was better than being out in the freezing cold for the same length of time, but, ironically, that day Sam was up on the platform directing the people there. Some in close-up reaction shots with wind machines that went off as the train went by, blowing their hair & scarves back and hats OFF! It was really cool looking, and even if I wasn't in a close-up shot, it would've been cool to be out there and watch Sam do his thing...but, alas. Me and my pals did go up there during lunch, though, and my friend took some pictures of Sam from afar. They're not the best, but they're something for the page, so...here ya go. And that's finally THE END!

I also included a scan of the pass that they gave us to get back onto the set when we had to leave it for a bathroom break or whatever, and on a funny side note, the lady in the red coat and bandana (in the photo with the crane in the background) is the lady who cut my conversation with Sam short...

Thanks for the news, but any chance we can lose the bold and italics? Very difficult to read at length.

A lot of projects are filmed under different names. I am not surprised about it and I believe that it's still going to be titled "The Amazing Spider-Man" when all is said and done.

If it's titled <b>The Amazing Spider-man </b> it's sure going to make alot of fanboys happy! Something like Spider-man 2: Dr. Ock____(something) wouldn't have the same value as Amazing.

Sam stated it will be titled that. So I'm going with what he said when he signed my book of the dead. :p

So what's the deal with them not letting you have a conversation with Rami, especially if he didn't seem to be bugged by it and was asking you questions? Holier-than-tho treatment just erks me. I've never been an extra on a set, but one of the things on my list of things to do before I die is to be an extra on a Sly Stallone movie, and stare at him the whole time, just because I heard he has a rule for extras not even to look at him.

Spider-Man 2 NY Filming Dates, Locations & Doc Ock's Lab!!

Scooper 'Knightmare6', who first alerted us that Spider-Man 2 was to start shooting in New York in April, has now sent us the exact dates and locations and word on what will serve as Doc Ock's lab...

Starting April 12th to 13th, 'Spider-Man 2' will be filming in New York City at Columbia University. The 14th and 15th of April, there will be filming in Forest Hills, Queens. The 17th of April will be shooting in Chinatown off Pell and Doyer Streets. The 21st to 23rd, the film will be shooting at the Hayden Planetarium which will serve as Octavius' labs. On the 26th filming will be taking place at Carmine and Bleeker Streets.

The dates of the 16th, 19th-20th, 24th, and 27th to 30th of April are still unknown, but probably used for rain dates and reshoots while the film is in New York City.

So if they do call the second "The Amazing Spider-Man," can they make a third and call it "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man." I actually kinda like the idea (although it's probably too much of a mouthful and labels me officially as a geek.) :)

sensational spider-man or web of spider-man. those were the names of the old spidey titles before marvel trimmed the fat.

Doc Ock was so lame... where is Venom?

Yea Doc Ock is lame....but he's old school. I'm sure Doc Ock will be juiced up and kick some @ss. Venom would be sweet....I'm hoping for some developing clues in Spidey2 that will set up Spidey3 with Venom.

Venoms story no matter how well told, will be bitched about because Venom is a complex character with a very very long rooted past. How the hell can you cover the costumes history and the story of venom in two hours?

Doc ock is also a more historically sounded spidey character

Venom would be hard to do without a 20 hour long movie about the "Secret Wars."

Can someone point out to me where Eddie Brock was in Spider-Man? Also, Dr. Curtis Connors and Mendel Stromm. I totally missed those references to future villians.

Eddie Brock & Dr. Conners' names were mentioned in dialogue only, as brief throwaway lines. J. Jonah said something about telling "Eddie" to get some pictures of Spider-Man, and I think Aunt May asked Peter why he wasn't working at Dr. Conner's lab. Dr. Stromm was the Norman Osborne's lab assistant (the one who got killed).

I think it was Harry who asked Pete about working with Dr. Conner

Venom is a frickin' idiot. He's "cool" if you're 14 years old. Doctor Octopus is a much more complex and interesting character. Ooo... Venom, the evil "dark side" of Spider-Man. Wow, how original an idea is that? :rolleyes:

No Lizard or Dr. Connors Mention in Spider-Man 2

Marvel Studios' Avi Arad said last week that there would only be one villain in Spider-Man 2, then a few days later came the announcement that villain would be none other than Doc Ock (played by Alfred Molina).

Now, Coming Attractions has confirmed that there won't even be a mention of The Lizard nor Dr. Connors in the second film. Perhaps we'll get to see him in a future sequel?
