need help picking a good love story

hey dvdtalkers! i need help from the infinate wisdom and knowledge from the members of this board.

i'm planning a special night for my wife this weekend and i wanted to pick a good love story, not necessarily a romantic comedy. preferrably a drama, but if you know a really good comedy, please let me know.

i know valentine's day was last weekend, but we didn't get to spend it together so this is sort of a make up. and besides that she's been pretty pissed at me lately so i need to make good.

i searched the forums and only came up with romantic comedy advice

i've racked my brain but i'm coming up short.

thanks for the help

Can you give us some other criteria to narrow it down? Love story - drama is so broad. There are literally thousands to choose from.

How old are you?

Before Sunrise is a good one for young people.

LA Story is good for all ages, but older couples would dig it more

I think LA Story is the best romantic comedy of the last 20 years

...I also recomend:
Say Anything
Summertime (love in Venice )
In the Mood for Love (my girlfriend loves this movie and I love her for loving it)
I Know Where I'm Going
Chungking Express (unrequited love, but still very romantic and fun)

I'll let you know when I think of more

thanks for the info. sorry i was so vague

we are both in our mid to late 20's

when i say drama. i guess i mean something light hearted, but not necessarily a comedy. something we can sit back and watch and enjoy some quality time together.

part of my problem is i'm really coming up with a blank here. i guess i haven't seen many romantic movies that weren't a romantic comedy. so i'm having a hard time giving examples of the type of movie i'm talking about

I don't get it. You want a romance where you can kick back and have a good time, but you don't want it to be a comedy. Huh?

The American President is a good love story with both drama and humor. Say Anything is also a good choice. The Thomas Crown Affair is a sexy drama with a love story and some suspense.

another vote for American President.

Maybe you would enjoy Wedding Singer? has an 80s flair and is actually quite sweet and funny.
A Walk to Remember is really good too.
If you to like Meg Ryan there is a plethora of movies to choose from.

Some Kind of Wonderful? Cusak (sic)?

Here's an uncommon suggestion: Creator.

If you want her crying at the end of the movie get SOMEWHERE IN TIME (1980)with Chris Reeve & Jane Seymor.
Also LADYHAWK (1985), URBAN COWBOY (1980).

Somewhere in Time is a great sentimental love story. more practical and pragmatic viewers will probably think its pretty cornball, but i still love it.

Jerry Maguire is a great film and at heart a love story (and a beautiful disc besides).

Say Anything is also solid.

in the classic category

The Thin Man & The Libeled Lady both display the chemistry of Willam Powell and Myrna Loy, one of the best screen couples ever. The Libeled Lady , unfortunately, is only available on tape, but its wonderful and one of the few movies to follow the courtship, as opposed to the Thin Man movies where they are already a couple.

Queen Christina (also only on tape) is a Garbo movie that isn't creaky at all. She plays an active, vibrant, intellectually astute queen who gives up the throne when she falls in love...with tragic results. most of the movie is quite light and playful though, which makes the ending even more resonant.

A Touch Of Class i thought was excellant. about an affair between a married man and a widow(?).
great chemistry between George Segal and Glenda Jackson

A Room With a View beautiful scenery of Italy and a good 'light' romance, but not really a comedy.

just released for the first time in widescreen-
A Little Romance one of the most charming movies ever made. Diane Lanes first film (at 13).
if this one doesn't do it, nothing will

Too bad Secretary doesn't come out till April.

If you don't mind older films try and check out Ernst Lubitsch's Trouble in Paradise (1932). It's the best romantic comedy I've seen (and one of the best movies as well). Great dialogue, flawless direction, realized and dimensional characters, wonderful pre-Code sexual play, great European glamour, and funny as all get-out.

Criterion just released it so I don't know how available it would be for rent. But it is worth the purchase.
